Solved: Sandisk 16GB cruzer micro only allows 4 GB of files
hi!

i am using the sandisk 16GB micro cruzer with the U3 launchpad and i want to store music and video on it but it says drive full after only 4GB of video. properties says there is still at least 10 GB of free space. any idea why?

thanks,

lesmimes

Do you use the U3? If not, you may be better off just removing it so you have a normal drive and see if that helps.

Is it formatted FAT32? If so, it has a 4 GiB limit per file. If you've selected multiple files to copy and one of them is too large, the copying will stop as soon as that file is reached, and the rest of the files will not be copied, even if they are less than 4 GiB.

ahhh! i did select a whole bunch of files. (i mean 16 GB = why go one by one?!? lol)

i did not format or anything when i bought it, but i will check if it is pre-formatted at FAT32. if it is, what will make it able to accept files larger than 4GB?

Format it in NTFS is the quick answer, but retaining U3 functionality is where you may have to do some research before going any further.

Use this tool, google it, its called "HP format tool" and it formats any flash drive to the original size. It sounds like it wasnt formatted right, and this tool is great, much better than going into my computer and formatting.

success! i ran into a bit of a snag while formatting to NTFS, removed drive safely, tried again and the second time selected quick format and all is well. currently downloading my u3 programs...it deleted the original set up i did with u3, but other than that all is well. this link really helped with the details:

thanks to all for your help!

NTFS is really not an appropriate format for a drive that small. That is why MS recommends NTFS on drives above 32 GB's, because NTFS is very slow on small drives and the overhead is so high that a lot of disk space is lost to the MFT and mirror. I have formatted a floppy in NTFS, but it has about half the usable space afterward.

Nothing in what was said above seems to answer the question of whether you actually had any files that were over 4 GB's in size. If you don't, or never use files that large, I'd go back to FAT32 for speed and compatibility, as well as to get quite a bit of disk space back.

Thumbs up thanks for all your help tech supprot guy!
hi, thanks for the info, but i do have a few video files over 4GB. that's why i went with this solution in the first place. ultimately, when i have the files down to less than 4GB, i will reformat back (saving files elsewhere first!).

i really appreciate you taking the time to make sure i've done what i wanted and what's best. i really love this site for that. i very rarely have to post issues as quite often i can find the answers already posted.
