Motherboard problem? i think.:)
Well, i'm new here, so i'd really appreciate a lot of help I've been through this site a lot of times too everytime I needed help; and now I really have to post because I need help again This is my first post btw.

I recently bought this computer. It is a package that contains a soundcard, built in 8 mb video card,Pentium IV at 2.0 gHz, with 120 gB HDD, and 512 mb ram. at 110 volts. I asked the computer shop if they can upgrade the video card, but they replied that there are no more slots available for them to be able to add a video card. Is there anyway I can add more video memory? I cannot play games because of this. I'd appreciate a lot of help.

No unfortunately, on board is stuck with what they give you. Some more details would help. You could always remove a least used card to free up a slot. With out details of the motherboard I can offer no suggestions as to what you can use

A system that old [P4] is not really going to play modern games regardless of the video card installed.

Next onboard type video often allows you to select more memory to the video ie go from 8meg to 64meg. This is an option in your bios. Read your manual to see if you have this option.

Next you might want to think about adding ram; 512 is pretty marginal given you use some ram for the onboard video.

Hey.Guys, Thank you so much for all the help. I now consider buying a new laptop instead. but may i ask, coz i really dnt knw anything about laptops.
Now here's the question:
In computers, there's an option to upgrade cards, etc. Is there also such an option to upgrade the hardware installed in laptops? My friend told me that when I buy a laptop, whatever the specs are cannot be upgraded anymore. Is that true?

Sorry for the follow up question. I dnt know if it's allowed in techguy. Im so sorry And still hope for your replies.

@chrome57 and crjdriver: Thank you guys again!

You can add ram or a larger hard drive; other than that, you cannot change the hardware in a laptop. There are a very few laptops that have a real video card that can be changed. Some of the alienware models have this; however those are not really "laptops" since the one I saw weighed in at about 10~12lbs or so.
