Question Solved: CD/DVD Drive NOT DETECTED!
Hello. I'm having trouble with a friend's computer. It's a Gateway MX3417 Notebook which came with XP Media Center 2002 pre-installed. My friend told me that his CD/DVD drive isn't working. I took a look and discovered that the drive is not recognized by the OS at all (My Computer, Device Manager). I upgraded his system to Service Pack 3 just hoping it might have some effect on the problem, but no such luck.

I have visited the Gateway Support site, and perhaps they may be able to help me (once I go through the process of filling out all the required fields just to be able to ask them any questions ). So I thought I'd try here first. I have yet to be let down by the advice I've received from the other members here .

I have included a HJT log in case it helps.

My understanding is that there are no other problems with this computer....aside from the fact that it will not run Mozilla Firefox for some crazy reason! (I'm also looking into that, and have started a thread for that issue as well. If anyone reading here can help with that matter as well, please feel free. http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/...ng-but-ie.html)

Thanks in advance.

If the drive doesn't show in Device Manager and there are no errors in Device Management then its like a hardware issue - check the drive cables, check the BIOS, or the drive may simply be faulty.

Yes, I had looked into his BIOS settings. The only thing in there that even resembled anything that had to do with the CD drive was under the Primary/Secondary Master section. I noticed the Primary Master was listed as the hard drive (appropriately I assumed). The Secondary Master was listed as "None". I was able to toggle through to set it to "CD-ROM" but I didn't want to mess with that just yet. It threw me off that there was no listing for a Primary or Secondary slave as well, which I'm used to seeing from working on PC's. So I didn't feel comfortable messing with the BIOS. But I'll give it a shot. It is interesting that the drive is getting power from the motherboard (it pops open when I push the eject button).

Beyond that, I'll try the cables or swapping to another disk drive.

Thanks A Lot Triple6!

Okay, I made the adjustment in the BIOS and then went into Device Manager and scanned for new hardware..... VOILA!! CD drive works fine now! Ha! Thanks again!
