Laptop instantly powering off.
Recently my laptop has been instantly powering off. This happens even while plugged in and with a full battery. In order for me to power it back on, I have to unplug the power supply AND remove the battery and put it back in. Not sure exactly what is causing this, but I don't believe it is heat.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

So as soon as you hit the power switch it powers on and quickly off? this sounds like a loose connector or something is grounding out.

No, sorry I wasn't clear. It's just powering off while I'm using it, as though it were a desktop that got unplugged. It switches to the battery fine if I just unplug it, but sometimes it just turns off instantly. It seems to only happen when I have it plugged in. On battery it works just fine.

My guess was a power surge of some sort with the outlet I was using. I moved it to a different outlet with a surge protector but am still experiencing the instant power loss.

It seems to only happen when I have the laptop plugged in. It has yet to happen when running it only on battery power.

Also, after this happened most recently, my CMOS date and time were reset but the laptop is only 1 year old. It's an Asus M50VM-B1.

Any speculation is much appreciated,

Thanks!

A laptop over heating could cause such action. Get a can of crompressed air, and blow the dust out of the vents as well as you can. Make sure that you are not using it on a soft surface such as a bed, carpeted floor or if you doo put a firm magazine or large book under it so the vents stay unobstructed.

I gave it some air, but I'm not sure if it's the heat. I mean I can leave the thing on my bed unplugged running a game but if I plug it in and put it on my knees just messing around on the internet i'll get random restarts.
