It is a dell inspiron 6000

Have you checked in Device Manager under Sound, video, Audio

Have you tried installing the sound drivers again?

It's possible, do you have a seperate sound card or is it intergrated into the mobo?

So it is integrated, it's possible that it is that actual built in sound card that's causing you all this hassle, but your driver says everything is cool?

device manager says everything is working fine and reinstalled the driver
should I do a system restore to be sure that it is a hardware issue?
