Black screen after logging out of Windows
This doesn't happen often, but it started a couple of months ago. Sometimes if I log out of a user account on Windows XP, it won't take me back to the login screen. The computer is still on, but the LCD monitor is blank and the power indicator light turns from green to amber. No keyboard or mouse actions bring the display back; I have to shut down the computer cold with the power button. Can anyone provide advice here? Thanks.

it sounds like the computer is either going into standby or hibernation, which operating system are you using?

It's Windows XP professional, all updates and service packs installed. I agree that it's acting like it's hibernating, it just only seems to do it when I log out of a user.

Computer is NOT set to automatically log on on startup; we've got a few different user accounts. Once the problem occurs, there's no change in the monitor power light. It's stubbornly amber despite all attempts at input from the mouse and keyboard.

hmm... a puzzler, do you have an on-board graphics card or pci graphics card? or both? and which one is the monitor plugged into, if you have both try removing the pci card and using on-board. and does the power and activity lights on the base unit change at all?
