wireless keyboard gone awry

Microsoft Wireless MultiMedia Keyboard 1.1
i have reinstalled the software from the MSN site, having misplaced the cd for it.
rebooted. no change.

some keys produce characters or symbols, just not the right ones;
some result in a function, such as CAPS LOCK ON / OFF
or such as one i pushed a minute or two ago which deleted the text i had typed here on the first press and my title on the second, which is why i decided not to go through the keys to produce their responses here, which i had started to do.
each key that displays/does something is consistent in its result.

i used to use the keyboard, so i know it did function properly. it has been stored for a couple years where nothing happened to it, just sat on a shelf in a box.

so......... ???

i am running a frankenstein computer (me being its creator), currently typing on the HP keyboard i've used all along. they are both currently plugged in, no conflicts.

your input please?
