Yes, it is a beautiful place, Dustyjay. (see my Profile page).
They were both set to master at first, but I changed to one of each (does it matter which?) and that didn't make any difference so I tried both on Cable Select. That didn,t work either.
I'm caught between a rock and a hard place now: I can't reload Windows as I have no drives for the disk. I tried to locate drivers for them, but they won't go in because Windows can't find a suitable device for them.
It's a Dell computer and I've always said this was the problem and the reason I have so many compatibility problems, but I think this one was created by me. Might have to save up for a new one.
Thanks to all of you for your help.

Do they show up in bios? Can you remove the drive you added and just try it with the single drive? What Model Dell?

No they are not listed on the Setup page (I presume this is the "BIOS"?) I will remove the second one and see if anything changes. It's a Dell Inspiron 1100 running XP with SP3. The drives are a Lite-on SOHD-167T and an LG Super-Multi GSA-4167B

I removed the new drive, leaving only the previously working LG drive, set to Cable Select, but it still was not found (I searched for it again). I have put the other one back now (the Lite-On). This is set to Master.
