Question Can't see DVD Rom Drive in Control Panel
Hi there. I'm new here, so gidday from W.A.
I had a dvd/cd drive and a cd drive on my PC, both working. I had another dvd/pc drive on the shelf, which I decided to change for the cd drive, to give me 2 DVD drives. I have done this, but now I can't see either of them on my Control Panel or in Explorer. I've tried "Searching for new hardware", and looked for "Changes to hardware", with no success. I have no disks for either of them. Anyone know how I can get Windows to find them? (my system uses Windows XP Home with SP3 installed).

What type are they, PATA or SATA? If PATA (the forty-pin, two-inch-wide data cable), it could be the jumper settings. You have to methods available to you. Assuming they are on the same cable, set both to cable-select (CS) or set one to master and the other to slave.

Thanks for replying, alex.
As you can probably see, I'm fairly much on my "L" plates on computers. I've never heard of a Pata, though I've seen Sata here and there. I've been through all my Control Panel settings and can't see anything to set those two cable settings there, or any where else. Sorry, can you help me find them? (Pretend I'm your local barman so I speak in words of one syllable).

Are they Connected to the same cable?

Have you look to see what the jumpers on the Drives are set at?

if you go to start > run > compmgmt.msc > drive management (think that's what it's called on xp) and click on that, do you see your two dvd drives? They will be on the bottom pane, and you will have to scroll down to see them, as the system will first report your logical drives.

Thanks again, both of you.
The cable is the 2-inch wide one, and the drives are both on the same cable. They were both set to Master. I've changed the new one to Slave (as that's what the old cd drive was set to also). No effect.I went to Run>Compmgmt.msc> but there is no drive management listed, so I went to the System tools>Device manager and looked for my drives, but it only showed my C drive. None of the other folders in Device manager showed anything useful.

yes, Disk Management is listed (under "Storage") but it also only shows my C drive. No mention of CD or DVD.

Thanks, Megabyte, I found and downloaded the file and runit, then restarted, but there was no change. I then asked Windows to find new hardware but it didn't find any.

If there is a jumper setting on the drives for Cable Select...try that...set them both on Cable Select

There was a third selection available for the jumper on both of the drives, labelled "O" (for optional, I suspect). I'll try this on both.

One drive should be set to master and the other drive should be set to Slave. Unless they are both set to cable select. I have mine set to master and slave. If they are bothset to master you will have problems such as you are describing.

By the way, I loved Perth and Freemantle when I visited there in '82. Beautiful area.
