Question computer shutdown
Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place but I am new as of today. This evening from 5pm my computer, whilst I have been working at it, has suddenly shown a black screen followed within seconds of all power closing down. I am speaking about a Laptop running Windows vista. This has happened 7 times in all now. It restarts ok. I did wonder at first if it was a power surge but can't see that as a possiblity. It has happened a couple of times in the past couple of months - but usually only once. I am really worried so can anyone help please. Many thanks

Due to the hot weather at this time of year many people have been bringing computers in to the shop I am doing work experience at with bad overheating problems.

Download Speedfan

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Install the program and then open it. It will tell you the temperatures of as many things as possible. Then when you have got the temps. Post them on this thread and I will have a look.

Hi, my laptop is running windows vista basic. The label on the keyboard says intel Celeron M. I have started to download the fan thingy but as I am such a novice I was alarmed by the info it gave - saying you have to be a power user etc., I don't do games etc just emailing, surfing the net and shopping. What do you think? Typing is now back up to speed. By the way I use one of those Belkin fan coolers to stand my laptop on,Thanks.

It is installed but I haven't opened it. I feel foolish but because it said you needed to monitor the settings and keep an eye on them - well the settings would be Greek to me. I just don't know what I am doing!

This pm while running the AVG scan of my laptop I realised that the temp shown be speedfan had increased significantly - it went from 70c to 80c then as high as 91c so I shutdown. It was showing CPU 100%. Now I am back on and not running scan (about 20 mins later) the reading is averaging 65c. HELP! I need to run my scans!

OK, Find out which way the fans on your laptop are blowing by holding a light match or a peice of paper by the vents on the back or by the keyboard. When you know which way the fans blow turn off the laptop and blow through the vents the opposite way to which the fans blow. Then turn back on and see if this has helped.

Blew through the vents and the scan has been running about 1hr 10 mins. The temp varies - but not spotted it any higher than 79c. Mostly round 72c. (Doing other jobs elsewhere in house!!). Will let you know outcome. Thanks.
