Angry cd drive problems
Been bashing my head into a wall today trying to figure this one out.
I burned a DVD earlier and soon as it was finished did what I always do and opened it to make sure it burned correctly. However, this time my drive stopped working. So I tried my other drive, same problem.
I have a DVD RW drive and a DVD/CD-RW drive installed and both refuse to read any cd/dvd now. The light comes on as if it's reading the cd when I first put it in, but nothing comes up. Both drives show up in My Computer and both say they're working properly in Device Manager. I've tried reinstalling them both and it didn't help at all. I've tried dvds, music cds, game install cds... both drives simply keep telling me to please insert a cd. Nothing I've found online so far has given me any clue as to what happened or what I could do to fix it.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Theory: The drives are on the same PATA cable and one of the drives has gone bad in a way that affects both drives' ability to handle disks.

Test the theory: Turn off the computer and disconnect one of the drives. Turn on the computer and see if the other drive works. Repeat the same process for the other drive.

Thank you very much. This at least found the problem, now I just need to buy a new DVD RW drive. Of course couldn't be the cheaper drive that wanted to fry itself.

Well, the good news is that you can get DVD burners so cheaply, it makes no sense to buy CD burners or DVD readers or CD burner/DVD-ROM combos.

Just be sure you get the correct interface--PATA (old two-inch-wide, forty-pin cable) or the narrow, four-pin SATA, commonly known as Serial ATA.

It is possible that it could also be the disc it's self. I know our computer wil not recognize some brands...
