PSU problem?
Hi,

I am new here and this is my first post on TSG so forgive me if i screw up. The problem I am having exists when playing GTA4. The game works perfectly fine and then all of the sudden freezes and I have to do a hard reboot. The windows error I get is ea. I have tried reinstalling the game and video drivers for my cards. Searching around on google i found that the most common reason for this is the lack of PSU power. However, it seems to me that my system should run off of my power supply. So if anyone has experienced this problem or thinks my power supply can't handle my rig then please comment...

Rig Specs
MoBo: Asus M3N-HT Deluxe

PSU: OCZ600sxs 600w

CPU: AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core, 2.6ghz, Black Edition

GPU1: Nvidia Geforce 9600GT, 1g DDR3
>Running SLI
GPU2: Nvidia Geforce 9600GT, 1g DDR3

Memory: 4g Corsair DDR2 1066

Harddrive: Hitachi 1T Sata

DVD-R: Some Cheap Samsung DVD Writer

Thanks,
Dylanator (Richard Dylan)

First thing I would do is run a memory test and you can do it in Vista by typing memory into "SearcH" and click on the entry that comes on the top of the search bar. Then reboot and run that.
I would check temps of cpu and system as well with Speedfan.

The power supply seems ok. You've got a good brand and 600W. The best way to see if it could be power related would be to disable the SLI.

600W is should be more than enough to run just the one card. If the issue resolves itself without SLI then it's either power or graphics related.

Also, what did you mean by "The windows error I get is ea"?

Ran the memory test for a couple hours and everything was okay. My temperatures were all below forty except my graphics cards both ran from forty to forty-five

The stop error code after it crashes and I boot back up is ea.. sorry for not specifying.. I have now set sli off but i did not take the second card out... It sometimes takes an hour of gameplay for it to freeze, however... and i can't run gta4 on high settings without my second video card =]... hehe.. but i'll turn the settings down and play the game without sli for a while later.. i have guests coming over and cannot do so atm..

Thanks for your responses so far... you guys are quick.

Those temps are fine. Was that while running the game? If so it's not an overheating problem.

Does this happen on other games? Far be it for me to lay the blame at Rockstar, but it could just be a bug with your hardware setup and the game. A pain, as then it's a software problem and you'll have to hope they patch it. But it's worth considering.

Good luck with the tests, and keep us informed on the progess.

I would tell you but since this is a fairly new pc.. This is the only graphical game i have atm.. xD I have crysis but i haven't installed it yet... I went and bought the "highest requirement" games I could find to test them on my pc... After i get that installed i will tell you how it reacts.... GTA IV is so long I figured i'd have a while before i had to install crysis... There's so much to do... no.. that wasn't while playing games, but i don't think it exceeds 55 because thats where i have my warning set and it hasn't gone off.. I hate when its a software problem... xD.. If thats what it is i should go badger Rockstar about it and make them patch it for me... =]..

Thank you again for your help with my graduation present =]...
