Unhappy Packard Bell EasyNote R1000 radio disabled
Recently i acquired a Packard Bell R1000 with the Atheros AR5005GS wireless network adapter

However, after installing drivers for the network adapter, it does not work. The Atheros Troubleshooter says that the radio is disabled.

So i tried pressing the Fn + F1 which is supposed to enable the radio. Nothing happened. Tried holding it down. Still nothing.

I'm sure there must be another switch on the laptop., but I cant find it.

Do any of you guys know how to fix this and enable the radio?

ps: What the hell is a radio doing on a computer?, I'm assuming radio refers to the wifi antenna. Maybe the antenna is not properly plugged in?

Sorry, just saw your post. You are correct, the wireless card is a radio tranceiver. Not familiar with Packard Bell products. Will look around and see what I can find out.

You may want to ask a moderator to have this transferred to the Networking forum. Could possibly get you help faster.
To do that click on Report at the bottom of your post and ask.

I reinstalled XP right after I got the laptop, Do you think that the radio needs special drivers?

EDIT: This maybe nothing but device manager shows a "PCI Simple Communications Controller" with the yellow question mark

Go to Packard Bell site, the radio driver is probably downloadable there.

Bear in mind, many laptops are built in mass-produced cases. The radio key could be there even if your laptop model doesn't actually have the radio function.

Looking around I found two driver downloads.
First from Packard Bell site for EasyNote R1000, but it says for Ateros 5BMB5

Second from Packard Bell EasyNote S2 series, but says it is for Atheros 5005G

Still looking also. Did find one thread where it was suggested to try Fn+F2, if Fn+F1 didn,t work.
