Exclamation Computer not starting
Hi,

I just got an old machine from my friend. When I set it up and try to power it up, it will not boot. At first, it would run for about 1 second and then power off. After removing the cord for a short while and reinserting it it would do the same again next time i tried.

After some experimenting i found, that if I held down the reset buton and then powered on, it would keep running, though there was still no picture.

I then removed the dvd-drive and reset the BIOS (by removing battery). When I powered it up the next time it kept running, but without picture. After a few seconds running it smelled like something was burning and I turned it off again.

Any suggestions to how this could be? I figured maybe the PSU is faulty, even though there is some kind of power supply to the components.

Tried turning it on again. This time I got a fairly long beep and then a short one. After this it turned off automatically.

appears the bios central site, with all the beep codes for various bios has gone ...

the original IBM code for 1 long 1 short = system board
BUT
they vary with bios

I think it's home built. From what I can see on the motherboard, it's an Asrock K7S41.

Apparently it's an AMI BIOS I have. Found this: http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/biosbeepcodes.asp. But it's doesn't mention one long and one short beep.

It checked again, and this is infact the code I get. The second beep ends just when the machine powers off. Could it be that the code doesn't get to the end, and it's cut off?
