Unhappy Solved: Sound card "no playback devices" cant get it to work...? plz help
Hey guys im new to this place so i hope this in the right section

im
on
windows xp
sp2

i recently installed manhunt, and im getting a "no audio hardware, or the hardware is not supported" error, so i googled it, and found i need to change my: "Sound playback: default device" to something..., although i cannot acces it because it is all greyed out...

i read a post on here about running cmd and finding all the hidden devices, but to no avail. i'd really like to get the audio running on the computer, let alone the game!

sound has always worked before, but recently my brother wiped everything and reinstalled xp (cos the computer was going real bung) but this shouldnt have affected the sound card should it?

Much appreaciated for ur time reading this, if i havent worded anything well enough, just ask and ill try re-wording it.
Thanks!

Hi and welcome to TSG.

If it has been recently reinstalled with Windows my first suspicion would be missing or incorrect sound card drivers.

To check go to Start>Control Panel

Then Select System (Assuming you are using classic view, not sure otherwise as I always use classic)

Select the Hardware tab then Device Manager

Look down the list of hardware and see if there anything with an Exclamation mark next to it. If you are online you can try Right Clicking and Update Drivers and get it to search for them.

If you know what type of Soundcard you have and aren't sure where to get the drivers then tell us what it is and someone will be able to help you out.

If you PC is a 'big box' brand ie. Dell or HP, what make and model is it?
If its self built what is the make and model of the motherboard, Graphics, Sound, etc?

The more info you can give us the easier it is to find the problem.

Red face hokay,...
hey thanks for helping so far =]

kkz, so im ACTAULLy on sp1...

XP
SP1
IBM Corporation
Interl (R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz
2.59GHz
512 MB of RAM

so i did what you said, it has a big yellow question mark and exlamaction mark next to
"Multemedia Audio Controller"
and
"SM Bus Controller"
i cant right click because this PC isnt connected to the internet anymore. If you could tell me what to download to update these drivers it would be much aprecciated, but i dont think the computer has an aftermarket sound card in it..you could tell me how to check this? thanks again =]

Ok, so you are missing the drivers, that should be easy to fix.

I need to know what the make and model of your PC is. If its something like a HP or Dell it will have the info written on it somewhere, something like Dell Optiplex (+ number) (or even better the Dell Service Tag number) or similar for HP, Will probably be on a sticker on the top or rear most likely. Then I (or someone else) can find the correct drivers for you.

If its a self build or custom built machine we will need to know the make and model of the motherboard (for onboard soundcards) or you can get the make and model from the card itself if its an add on card. If this is the case you will need to open up the PC to get the info, hopefully its a 'big brand' PC as that will make life alot easier

I would suggest removing the 2nd number from your post also, it would appear to be your product key for windows, don't want that getting shared around.

As far as I can tell your PC is an IBM Thinkcenter A50p (Model 8195-D9M) and the drivers you need are located here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...IGR-50534.html

However, there are 3 different Audio drivers listed and I can't seem to find anything specific about your particular machine so you may need to try all three. It should tell you if they aren't the right ones when you try to install them, either that or it just wont work afterwards.

If you look down the list on the link you will see Audio right near the top then under that 3 sets of drivers:
ADI SoundMAX onboard audio driver
ADI SoundMAX onboard audio driver with Cadenza software
Soundblaster Audigy audio driver

I would try the first and the third driver downloads and see which one works, make sure you download the drivers for Windows XP on the first one.

Let us know how you get on.
