Unhappy "What good's a clicker if it won't click?"
My mom had an HP that went to crap. When we noticed it did, we transfered all of her pictures and music to a WD external hard drive. Well, we both have new laptops and I decided to trasfer all of that back. Big Mistake. Now, both of our computers are having issues. My mom's touchpad no longer clicks. Both of our touchpads are erratic, slow, and weird. I've noticed the speed of the comps has decreased. I'm afraid I took all the issues that busted up the old computer and carried them to these. Since then I've deleted all the data transfered to my comp and I'm going to try a system restore. My cousin told me I should download new drivers for the touchpads. I'm really hoping this is a simple issue that can be fixed easily. I don't think I can handle it being anything serious.

What should I do?

Use a good quality Anti Virus program to scan your computer for viruses that may have come from the data you have transfered.

We both use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. Since I transfered it, I've ran scans on both the comps twice and it says nothing's wrong and that everything's working fine. I'm running full scans that cover nearly everything in the comp.
Maybe it's not a hardware issue but a software one?
Do you think I should install new drivers?

Also, I've tried running system restores and both times I've done so it says it could not be completed because an error occured during the process.

My computer seems to be working fine. I'm mostly worried about my mom's. Her touchpad is experiencing somewhat erratic behaviour, it moves fine other than that but when she tries to click with the actual touchpad, it only works on the opening screen where she clicks on her name to get in. Clicking with the touchpad any other time yields no results. So, sorry to bother you with my redundance.

Should I get her a new touchpad driver or do you think it's a different issue?

Also, anytime I'm clicking or double-clicking on things on either computer, it shows me the moving circle (hourglass), like it's taking a lot for it to do it, but it only does it at a slightly slower speed. And I've noticed when I type, the screen doesn't respond as quick as I think it should. My sister just thinks I'm over-analyzing and being paranoid.

ok then. It is probably best to give it a quick once over and clean everything up. And then download your new drivers and install them.

1) Uninstall any programs that you no longer need.
2) Download, Install, and run CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
3) After CCleaner is finished download and install auslogics disk defrag and run that http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag

These two programs run together often make a noticable difference to the performance of a computer or laptop especialy if they haven't been run before.

Only thing I would caution you about, using ccleaner, is to disable the regedit. Registry cleaners of any kind can cause untold grief... Just browse the forums a while and you will see.
Good Luck

Yes I forgot to mention that. Even though it has a back up feature sometimes it can cause realy bad problems.

I still use it because I have nothing to loose to be honest just some songs. I can easily re-install xp.

Well, quite frankly the words "untold greif" scared me and I just uninstalled the program. I've got nothing special, either. I just don't want to have to do that.

I used both the ccleaner and the defrag and I didn't notice considerable change in speed.

The other night a window popped up saying my synaptics touchpad thing was experincing problems and that I installed a different pointer device, which I didn't do.
My mouse just lost it's scroll function so I decided now is the time to install a new driver for the mose and hopefully it will solve the problem.

Could you direct me to a safe, reliable website for a toshiba m305-s4910 touchpad driver download?

Thank you much for helping me.

Also, I heard people had bad computer problems because they didn't know what they were doing when they installed the drivers. I have no clue what I'm doing, mainly becuase I just heard of drivers less than a week ago. So, could you also help me with the proper steps to install a driver?

For drivers usually just goto the manufactures website and find your pc or product and you will usually see a area with drivers, though from what you've said I would probably say this is cause of a bad file or some sort of virus. I would personally install another anti virus like AVG or use a online one such as symantec's.

http://security.symantec.com

Goto security check and virus detection and let it run, it might take some time but it's worth it.

If it all comes down to it I would just personally say format the PC's. Her photo files should be fine but I'm just wondering about the music ones (If they were obtained from say a bad source) could be corrupt or infected with something.

to be honest it does sound like a virus, it seems odd to me that the laptop was working fine until you transfered said files across to new laptop and then it all went to pot. it sounds like a virus got transfered onto the external HD. i personally dont like AVG it uses a lot of resources as does norton, i use avast and spybot search & destroy. them combined usually find anything nasty lurking around.

The program CCleaner is good and causes no problems as long as you uncheck the regedit item.

Try this for the driver you are needing.... open device manager, Is there anything there with a yellow triangle with ! or ? in it?
If there is, right click on it, select properties, remove. Immediately reboot the computer and let windows find/reinstall the item (ie. Mice)
Post back and let us know how it goes.
Then we can go to another step.
