Question What Memory Works With An AMD Phenom II
I am looking to building a computer using the AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition 3.1Ghz 6MB cache and socket AM3. Will this work in an AM3 board with DDR3 memory?

Yes, but shouldn't really be used in one. DDR3 RAM offers zero real life performance increase compared to DDR2 1066, 1200, etc, and is harder to find compatible.

I agree; the ddr2 will save you some money as well. As for selecting the ram, check the board maker's site for tested/approved ram.

Generally as long as you use name brand ie crucial, kingston, or corsair ram, you should be fine however do check the list.

I highly recommend this Gigabyte board It will support AM3s and uses ddr2 ram. I am using this same board running a 940 overclocked to 3.4gig and absolutely stable. Runs prime95 with no errors.

Instead of checking the (usually) very limited list, Crucial, Kingston and Corsair also all offer a memory search tool on their sites to find compatible RAM for a specified motherboard. Lately, however, they seem to have many holes in the selection of motherboards to find memory for...
