Windows XP does not recognize my sound card
My computer had a very bad virus infection and the hard drive had to be reformatted. The problem is after reformatting I have no sound at all.
The OS is Windows XP Professional (SP 3), the mainboard is Intel DG33BU, and the audio device is Intel (ICH9) HD audio controller.

Regular Windows XP checks only tell me I have no sound device or direct me to install the sound card drivers. However, every time the process fails at the very end.

Can anyone help me?

You need to install the drivers for the system again.

Start by installing Chipset: Intel® Chipset Device Software for Intel® Desktop Boards - 9.​​1.​​1.​​1015: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2780&lang=eng

Then install the following:

LAN: Intel® PRO Network Connections Driver for Intel® Desktop Boards - 14.​​4: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2780&lang=eng

Audio: Realtek* ALC Audio Driver - 5911: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2780&lang=eng

Video: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for 3 Series Chipset Based Intel Desktop Boards - 14.​37.​1.​5029: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2780&lang=eng

I could follow your procedure up to the Realtek step. At this point I got an error message saying that "Realtek-H audio driver could not be installed". There was an error code also (Error code: 0xE0000227).

Do you have any other ideas for me?

Try the driver from the Realtek website: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
Third one in the list, the .exe version.

Still did not work
Hello, Triple6,

I just tried running the other Realtek file you suggested, but got the same error message.

Could it be that Windows XP itself is corrupted and will not let me install the audio drivers? It would be strange, though, that except for the audio everything else is working fine.

Do you perhaps have a second sound card installed? On the back of the computer, is there one set or more then one set of audio jacks and are the jacks built-into the mainboard or a small card that fits into a white PCI slot?

No second sound card
Dear Triple6,

I do not have a second sound card. All I have is the onboard sound card that came with the mainboard.

This problem started after the hard drive was reformatted and Windows XP reinstallled. This is why I thought that it could be a problem with Windows in the first place. Is there any way I can check on it?

Can you post a screenshot of Device Manager with the Sounds & Audio section expanded?

Did the Intel Chipset INF install successfully?

If you are asking if there's a way to check to see if Windows is installed correctly, not really. Did you have any issues while installing it?

Same problem all along!
Dear Triple6,

While reformatting the hard drive, this problem with the audio device was the only thing that went wrong. Windows XP apparently was reinstalled successfully and I then proceeded to install the drivers. When I got to the audio device, Windows did not recognize it and the process of installing the corresponding drivers always failed at the very end. I had no problems with the Intel chipset drivers.

As I have the Portuguese version of Windows XP on my computer, I will just translate what the Device Manager says:

Sound, Video, and Game Controllers:
1. Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
2. Audio Codecs
3. Video Codecs
4. Media control devices
5. Legacy device for video capturing
6. Legacy audio drivers

Except for the first one, the Device Manager says "Device working properly". Regarding the first one (Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus), the Device Manager says that "there are no drivers installed". However, trying to install the drivers via the Device Manager fails just like any other method I have tried.

Have you tried to uninstall that device and then run the Realtek installer?

Also double check that you have the D33BU board. Download SIW and look under eh Hardware -. motherboard -Model section.
