HDMI picture looks like crap
I just bought a new LG 23" monitor/TV (M237WD) to hook up to my laptop. The monitor has both DVI and HDMI inputs, and my laptop has just an HDMI out. When I hook up my laptop to the monitor with cable 1 (HDMI [out]-DVI [in]), everything looks great. However, when I use cable 2(HDMI [out]-HDMI [in]), the colors are a bit off and the desktop text looks fuzzy. Also, the signal with DVI lists (on the LG monitor screen) as 1920x1080@60Hz, whereas the signal with HDMI lists as 1080i (not p). I have tried swapping out the HDMI-HDMI cable, so it's not that. I also had the same thing happen when hooking the monitor up to another computer's HDMI out port.

I've tried using Just Scan; it fixed the scaling but not the picture quality. I've also tried renaming the HDMI port to "PC," but that also did nothing. Should there be a difference between HDMI and DVI picture rendering?

(I need to use HDMI because that's the only input that's HDCP compatible.)

Thanks!

Well, FWIW 1080 i is interlaced and 1080 p is progressive scan, differences being explained more exhaustively here

seems that the LG is interpreting the PC input via HDMI as a HD image as from DVD player, Blu Ray etc. The DVI appears to be interpreted (correctly) as a PC image input.

That's my guess.

The features for your LG show that it has 3 picture modes to choose from. Have you tried changing the mode, or is that just for Video image (like "cool, warm, personal etc.")?

You may also wish to try changing the pixel resolution output on your PC

Thanks for reply
Thanks for your reply, buffoon. I got in touch with a second tech at LG who knew what he was talking about and it appears you are correct--that the LG M237WD views the HDMI signal as coming from a video (e.g. BluRay) player, and uses different pre-processing than the DVI input. Also, the tech said that on this particular unit it is impossible to change the HDMI input to see the signal as from a PC. But that is okay because I'll use the DVI connection for my PC desktop, and the HDMI only for BluRay movies--which are still from my computer's BluRay player, but Sony says it sends out a signal just like a stand-alone BluRay player. I assume this is why the PC text looks bad. (The 1080i description went away though, so I'm not sure where that came from.) Anyway, thanks again for your help!
