Question Solved: Strange hard drive issue
OS: Windows XP MCE

I have a WD black 1tb drive as my secondary drive. It has been working fine for a few months. Then yesterday it wasn't showing up as a drive. PC Drive Doctor showed the smart status as being good. WD lifeguard showed the smart status as being not available. It failed the cable test.

But I can go into device manager and disable and re-enable the drive. It shows up in 'my computer' passes all the lifeguard tests. And just flat out works perfect.

I don't think the drive is bad, since it works after I turn it off and on in the device manager. It is also very quiet and fast. It might be a software issue, but I figured hardware is the appropriate place to but this thread.

The only error in my event log is: The Intel® Quick Resume Technology Drivers service hung on starting.

Any ideas?

Something worth checking... Be sure all the connections to the drive and the mobo are secure and firmly seated. I usually disconnect and reconnect them to ensure this is so. Another remote possibility... It could be a cable issue.

I found the problem. I disabled the quick resume on startup and now the drive shows up fine. Now I need to figure out why it happened and conflicts with the drive mounting in windows.
