Solved: Samsung hdd - return code 7
hello
trying to assist my father with his PC - dell optiplex gx620. Received 'SAMSUNG HD080HJ/P - Fail - Return Code 7' after running diagnostics. PC will not boot, even into safe mode, just restarts again (would you like 'last known good', etc. etc). No recovery console configured, no OS CD. sigh. anybody have a suggestion?

Well if the hard drive fails diagnostics then its likely faulty and in need of replacement. Drives are cheap enough these days and you might even be able to clone the old drive to the new drive, if not then you'll need to perform a fresh install of Windows onto the new drive.

update on 'reutrn code 7'
thanks for the cloning reference, Triple6 - I had forgotten about that (I have been out of the IT world a while doing 'mommy' stuff). I found an old NT boot CD, got to a prompt, and ran chkdsk /r - fixed it nicely for the time being, AND the incident convinced the folks to buy an external HDD for backup and replace their current internal. all is well w/ the world again.
