Win XP SP3 black screen freeze
I have this problem on my HTPC which is on all the time.
It has a problem of totally freezing every couple days with a black screen, can't get out of it until I reset the tower.
Every time it happens I look at the event log and I see these:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: atapi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 15
Date: 29/09/2009
Time: 5:24:01 AM
User: N/A
Computer: JASON-HTPC
Description:
The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, is not ready for access yet.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 29/09/2009
Time: 5:24:01 AM
User: N/A
Computer: JASON-HTPC
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D.

They come in pairs, and occur every 2-3 minutes until about half an hour later, which I suspect when the machine totally freezes up (no more log entries of these problem).

I read it could be cable, I've switched the sata cable on the HD and the sata port it's plugged to on the MB.
I have no problem reading from the disk otherwise.
I suspect something's wrong with my MB, but odd that I don't see a log event for my C: only on the D: and the DVD writer (why does it log it as ide, it's sata..)

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Do you have all of the newest drivers? Have you tryed switching which port you plug your hard drive into?

well in terms of drivers, there isn't much I can update.
Didn't see any chipset driver update from Gigabyte.
I've just updated the firmware of the dvd-writer, not sure if it'll do much.
One thing I suspect but not sure if it's possible is that something's wrong with the dvd-writer, because the "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, is not ready for access yet." error always comes first following with the "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D."
Maybe somehow they're connected on the mb...not sure.
guess I can try to unplug the dvd drive and see if the problem still happens.

As I've said on my post, i've already switched up the port my hd's plugged into.

Can someone explain to me why "\Device\Ide\IdePort1" refers to my dvd drive, as it's sata, and not ide?
