Question Keyboard types wired letters
I'm not sure if this is the area of the forums to post this but, I have a problem with my laptop keyboard.

Sometimes when I press shift the buttons come out with wired letters.
Such as and E with an accent on it when I press shift and question mark.

Basically any symbols don't work. I try typing the @ sign and the number 3 will appear. I tried everything from function, alt, ctrl, shift and windows key + differnt combinations and nothing seems to work. The only way to make this stop is somehow to wait it out, or restart laptop.

Is there a way to stop this?

I am using vista Premium 64-bit.

Check out the input languages that are installed on your system (In XP these can be found via Control Panel->Regional and Language Options, Languages Tab, Details button. In Vista they're probably somewhere almost the same but just different enough that you can't find them!).

It sounds like you might have the keyboard set to United States-International or some other weird and wonderful setting.

Which lappy brand, model, model #?
Please provide a product support page from the lappy's manufacturer.

Create a UBCD, boot to it. Does the problem occur? If yes, the problem is hardware; if no, the problem is software.

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

Have any liquids been spilled on the keyboard? Any liquids used to clean the keyboard?

Connect a USB keyboard to the lappy.

Hp pavilion model number dv5-1334ca

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=3979352

The language is set to Canada US.

Again this only happens once in three days but it does occur.
I never spilled anything on it and and the laptop is maybe 1 month old.
I haven't cleaned with anything other then a dry cloth and I always shut the screen or put some protector when I am not near my laptop.

What is a UBCD? How do I get it?

A:
Link for UBCD provided, above.

When the problem is visible, create a screen shot & post it to this thread.
Screen shot
screenshot

On your keyboard, look for a key labeled "print screen" OR "PrtSc" OR "PRN SCN" or some variation.
When you want to capture that which is displayed, press the print screen button.
Open Paint [ start > programs / all programs > accessories > paint [ rarely MS Paint]
Maximize Paint
left click "edit"
Left click "paste"
file > save as.
Save the file to any location of your choice.
File name: your choice, for example: "filename"
save as type: left click down pointing arrow. Left click jpg / jpeg
Left click "save" / "ok".

The file name has now been saved as filename.jpg [ or filename.jpeg ].

Return to the thread.
Left click "go advanced".

Left click "manage attachments"
left click "browse"
browse to the location, on your computer, where you saved "filename.jpg"
Left click filename.jpg
left click "open"
left click Upload"
close window of upload screen after the file has been uploaded.

enter text into the reply area.
left click "submit"

Ok well it happened again but because of certain things I cannot provide a screen shot yet. I can how every show you what the buttons produce.

Top row is what key I am pressing
The second row is what key comes up when this problem occurs

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) { } : " | < > ?
! " / $ % ? & * ( ) ^ ¨ : ` > ' . É

I will create a ss as soon as it occurs again.

Edit the alignment did not come out correctly but just start from the beginning and follow the top with bottom. The question mark is the E

You can use the toolbar in Paint to erase that which you do not want to share with the world.
Here's 1 tutorial. http://www.ettc.net/tech/tips/how%20to%20paint.pdf
You can find more.

Some of these symbols! " / $ % ? & * ( ) ^ ¨ : ` > ' . É
are properly created.
But some, for example the É , is not. Can you properly create this É ?

Ok here is an example when it happened on msn.

Basically the keys come out the way they are suppose to come out when you hold the function key. the problem is that I am not holding any key down.

Thanks for the explanation!

I went to the product page you provided, upon my request.
There, in the upper right, I typed in [ sans quotes ]: "fn"

Interesting title to the article:

Incorrect Characters are Displayed when Using Keyboard

Give it a go.

Ok well I followed there instructions and it was a fail. In notepad when I typed jump it came out jump and my numpad key is not on, all the letters came out correct.

When I went back to msn or Dreamweaver all the keys came out like pressing fn + key.

Do you mean you flashed the BIOS?

"To prevent the keyboard from changing modes incorrectly in the future, update the computer's BIOS."

Have you contacted HP tech support?

Go here. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=3979352

Read the section on updating the BIOS.

NOTE OF CAUTION
Flashing / Upgrading / Changing the BIOS, if things go poorly, can render your computer useless.

Personally, were this my lappy, I would contact HP Support before flashing the BIOS.

Keep us posted.

Well I contacted Hp. I went through the BIOS updating, keyboard uninstalling driver and reinstall and no luck. They gave me the option of recovery disk or recovery disk. They said if this didn`t work I would have to get the keyboard replaced or what ever is the problem. Anyone have any ideas left?
