Post Video issues (BSOD), possibly drivers
Hello,

New to the site, but I was on a forum of the same name years ago (not sure if this has anything to do with that site) and found it to always be an amazing help.

I'm having problems when playing video, either on VLC, through the internet (e.g BBCi Player), or when running a game.

The video will freeze, and then BSOD with the following error (as show in the minidump below): DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I am pretty sure my display drivers are all up to date, although this has been happening since I first got the laptop, with all versions of the drivers.

Anyway, I'll try and provide as much info as possible in the hope that someone much smarter than me can help to diagnose and fix the problem.

This is the system info provided by NVIDIA:

I would post some error info from the event viewer, but I'm unfamiliar with how to use it, if you need me to find anything else out though please let me know.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm hoping someone can help me get to the bottom of this.

Many thanks,

Tom.

Well, there should still be some sort of "I-want-a-new-one-or-have-it-repaired" guarantee on it.
If it happend as soon as you unboxed the PC and turned it on, it's hard to say what could be wrong. So, I will be guessing around.

First, it's no big secret nVidia's GPU's are horrible in laptop's. I'm not looking for a nVidia vs. ATI war, I'm using nVidia myself.
I'm not meaning it perfomance'ish, more lifetime'ish. The nVidia chips die incredibly fast in laptops. You'll be amazed if you google it.

Second, does the music still play after video froze up?

The sound stutters as the video freezes, but only for a second or two before the blue screen appears.

This laptop has only a few days before the end of the warranty, do you suggest I try and get it replaced? There is a lot of work on the hard drive i need, would they transfer it if the laptop were to be replace?

Well, that depends on the manufactor. What they usually do, is removing EVERYTHING off the computer (unless they know what's wrong, of course) then install everything again with factory defaults. If it's still faulty, you either get a new one, or money back.

If I start that procedure, but the warranty runs out while they are still dealing with the problem, am I still covered?

The laptop is Hewlett-Packard by the way.

It is for most. Of course, you could always just ask 'em. Has the same thing happend since you bought the machine?

Also, formatting the computer will most likely cancel the warranty, yes.

Yes you are right, I'll call them; is it not possible to diagnose the specific problem with the error logs I am generating then?

edit: oh, and yes, this has happened since I first got the machine, although it doesn't happen every time I play video, sometimes i can go for a long time without it crashing...

Well, it's either a sound card fault or graphics card. I'm still leaning up angaist the graphics card. Did you update the drivers as the first thing? Depending what kind of computer it is, trying a Driver Roll-Back would really be worth it, if it's just for work.

I don't think updating the drivers was the first thing I did, in fact I was told several times to update them, after the crashes were first observed, by various customer support people (although this was not HP support)

Hmm... Yeah, your the graphics card probably is dead then. I'd go for an ATI card in future. Their way more stabile for laptops. I prefer nVidia for desktops though.

Best wishes, Case.
