Unhappy HP 530 Laptop Heating Issue.
Respected All,

Hi There! Off lately, I got my HP 530's LCD screen replacement by paying money due to some Warranty issues. Now, the HP Service Centre in Mumbai has done the LCD Screen replacement and says that also the cleaning & servicing work has been done. Once I bought my HP 530 Laptop back home, I started using it and noticed that my laptop now starts getting heated from the bottom at much faster speed within no time than it used to before. Also, when I ran a tool known as "Intel Processor Identification Utility" on this laptop, I see that System Bus has been reported to being overclocked. So, I went to BIOS and got all the setting back to default by Pressing F10 key within BIOS. After this, I restarted my computer and again ran the same utility but this time, it reports that the System Bus is now fine and NOT Overclocked. However, the heating issue underneath still continues.

This heating is immensely happening exactly in an area under the ventilation fan and at the side compartment near to Ventilation fan from the bottom of the laptop. Now, I believe that this area should be the processor compartment. Therefore, I checked out the bottom Ventilation area (Circle Shaped) with the torch light and found that the Fan is not moving at all even though the laptop is getting heated. However, when I talked to HP Service Centre, he says that the Fan rotation is an automatic function which will only rotate once the system starts getting heated and what I am experiencing at the moment is Normal heating but I don't accept that since it is heating much more than expected.
And it is much wired to accept that when in Desktop PC, the moment the computer is Turned ON, the Power Supply Fan starts rotating than why not the same in HP530 Laptop.

Also, HP service centre mentioned that keeping the laptop in continuous charge mode can also increase the heating but I believe that once the battery gets charged to 100%, then there is an automatic "Cut Off" and the laptop should work directly work on Alternate Current and I used to keep it connected before as well in last year but such heating never used to happen. So, I have a question to ask here:

a) When a fan isn't rotating in a laptop from the side and down ventilation, than how safe is it to still continue using the laptop? Can it affect the CPU & Motherboard?

b) It is true that once the battery gets charged completely, the Power cord should be disconnected or is it safe to continue on the Alternate Current (AC) as well? Can working on Alternate Current damage the laptop's Motherboard, CPU or any other compontent?

Kindly help me out please.....Thanks!

Regards,
Apoorva.

Hi,

It is possible that your laptop could have a fan installed that only comes on when necessary. Remember, laptops are designed to be compact, portable, and quickly accessible - thus, they do whatever they can to conserve battery life, even if it means shutting off the fan for a short while. This is rarer in desktops as they power more devices (thus, generate more heat) and, quite frankly, don't need to conserve power when they are plugged into an AC outlet all day.

That said, CPUs - any CPUs - do heat up pretty quickly - if your computer is running for say 15-20mins and at no point the fan comes on, there is a problem. Do you have any games or media player applications installed? Try playing a game or a movie for 10 minutes or so...this should get the CPU generating a lot more heat than when its idle or running smaller programs - and a fan is essential with this operations.

Also, it is true that once the battery is full, you should disconnect the power cable and run off of battery power. I'm fairly sure your laptop has a lithium battery (my friend has the same laptop) which is good news - it means that your battery is less likely to be affected by leaving it plugged in, or charging it before its ready - however, whatever the manufacturers tell you, every laptop battery is, to one degree or another, affected. If you don't unplug, its not going to destroy your laptop, but it will reduce the life of the battery and you will sooner have to replace it than if you unplug.

Post back with your findings to see if we can/should investigate further. Provided the fan does run, and provided the underside of the case doesn't get so hot that you can't touch it, things should be ok. Just remember to backup your data in case the worst should happen.

HP 530 Fan not Spinning issue.
Hi There!

Firstly, my Fan just doesn't Turn ON at all! Now at BIOS mode, nor at Window Desktop mode. It just doesn't rotate leading to overheating of the base compartment near to ventilation area. Also, there's no single application, movies or songs that I play still, the laptop's base gets heated. This is an extreme worrying factor b'coz I am quite sure that this will damage either Motherboard or CPU or probably both of them. However, as I read somewhere else, pushing the fan should work therefore, I used a pointed thin pin and with extreme care, I tried to push the Fan from the bottom ventilation area and it started rotating ! ! ! ! However, after rotating for about few seconds, it stopped again. And while it was rotating, I could feel the force of the Air from the side ventilation that much.

As you mentioned: "Try playing a game or a movie for 10 minutes or so...this should get the CPU generating a lot more heat..."

Under no circumstances I can do this since (When the fan doesn't rotate at all and needs to be pushed to work for some time) this will definitely blow off my CPU, Circuits & than the Motherboard itself finally leading me to throw this Laptop into dustbin and saying Good - Bye forever.

Let me tell you something, these all issues arise after I sent this HP 530 Laptop to my computer dealer (From whom I purchased this laptop) in April, 2009 who further forwarded it to an unheard HP Service Centre known as Ashtech Infotech Pvt Ltd. in Mumbai for LCD screen replacement as it had suffered liquid spreading from within. They rejected my LCD screen replacement and sent it back to my technician. Once I collected my laptop back, I noticed the following issues with it:

a) Touch pad's Double click not working.
b) Scratches at the top & side cover.
c) Fan spinning very fast than expected (This can be felt when I bring my fingers across the side ventilation and notice that air is being disposed off at much faster rate).
d) Laptop started to get heat up very fast and then used to get shutdown within 1hr 30 mins approx.

However, all these issues weren't there when I handed over my laptop to this computer dealer in April. 2009. Now either my ******* computer dealer or that ******* Ashtech Infotech Pvt Ltd. has deliberately tried to play around with my laptop thereby damaging it further. Later, I convenience HP India and got the screen replacement approval from their team. However, upon their further warranty investigation, it was found out that this laptop was initially supposed to be sold in Dubai but since this has been sold in India to me, than this product belongs to Grey Market therefore; my computer dealer has cheated and harassed me a lot! Finally, I had to clear this issue from my pocket and got a new LCD screen replacement done since HP cancelled all the warranties on this laptop. And approaching law in such case of cheating and asking for justice is extremely a bad idea since Indian Consumer Law is completely hopeless, corrupted and extremely troublesome! It takes at least 1.5 yrs for my 1st case hearing to come – that slow is the law system. Anyway’z, coming back to my HP 530 laptop point, when I purchased my laptop, right from June 2008 till March 2009, my Fan always remain turned on and at no point it would stop b’coz it had to perform its function of disposing off hot air from inside and I never faced any issues with system and the Fan as well. Laptop was working smoothly, no heating issue. But, at the moment, Fan isn’t turning on at all.
Could you kindly suggest what can be done about this?

Regards,
Apoorva.

Okay well no false. If your battery is Lithium-ion, then you can keep it plugged in. Lithium has a memory in it that when you let it run continuously, it will remember that and start losing charge faster. When you first get it, you should let it discharge fully, then charge, then discharge, then repeat maybe 3 times. but after that you can keep it continually plugged in.

now for your heating problem. There is a possibility that the fan just doens't work. And you might need to replace it. If your experienced enough, I would take it apart and take a can of compressed air and blow everything out. Make sure no dust is blocking it. There is a setting that automatically turns the fan on, but it should still be on.

I would also recommend getting an underneath fan. One that I use and keeps it extremely cool and is pretty cheap is this one:

Good luck.

I was wondering what temperature are you getting, use something like HW monitor or speed fan.
