Exclamation HP Laptop Video Card Fried? Weird issue.
I've had my laptop for a little over two years. It's the HP Pavilion dv9535nr, specs in the link.

Since Friday, I've been having some serious issues with the graphics card. When booting up, the HP logo has some vertical yellow lines through it, and all console text has black splotches on the letters. Furthermore, in BIOS, there are grey lines and dots all over the screen. When I boot up to the OS, if I get that far, everything loads in VGA at the lowest possible resolution and color depth. Hardware manager shows that the device is not being used because of an error. This is clearly a hardware issue.

It's been going on like this on and off since last Friday. On Friday, I walked home in the rain with my computer on my back. My computer was in my Swiss Army backpack, and I assure you, nothing in my backpack was even slightly moist. I've been able to do everything I normally do when this loads properly, though sometimes some of the graphics on display are corrupted.

Today, I thought all was lost. Several times, I would close my computer, which should send it into suspend mode. However, when I reopened my computer, it would reboot itself. The third time it did this, I was unable to boot my computer with a functional video card. I tried taking the computer apart to see if I could get a look at the video card, but the screws seem designed to be less persuasive when taking them off, so I didn't get far enough to actually get a look at anything on the motherboard.

Finally, I tried to use some compressed air to spray out the fans. I sprayed them out from the outside, then tried to boot my computer. For some reason this was a success. I feel like if I can actually get a look at the video card, even if mounted to the motherboard, I can figure out what is wrong with my computer. Like I said, this is the ONLY thing that is wrong with my computer.

Does anyone have any idea where or how I can see the video card of the dv9535nr? I feel like it might have some kind of dust buildup or something that might be shorting out the graphics card. Please help! I'm a poor college student in Computer Science, and don't have money for a new computer. Thanks.

I dont think this is a hardware issue, I have the same problem with my PC. It all started on friday aswell. I doubt if it was a hardware issue, It would happen on the same day, it seems to be happening to alot of people recently, some people believe it is because of the windows update.

No, it is a hardware issue. It happens in BIOS. I haven't used Windows in months, and certainly haven't updated anything. I use Linux, and it happens there too. I only used Windows to double check and make sure it wasn't a software issue.

I talked to the HP people on the site, they told me the video card was mounted to the motherboard, and that I would need to service it, which would cost a minimum of $400. I'm not going to pay that. Supposedly I need to take apart the entire computer to reach the video card.

I wouldn't pay to fix an HP laptop, HP's have had massive failures in the past 3 years. There's about a dozen series of laptops that have had their warranties extended by a year due to numerous issues and failures and each of those series has dozens of sub systems underneath them; yours isn't part of the "service enhancement" but I've seen numerous laptops supposedly not affected by experiencing the same symptoms and eventual death. There's also several desktops series under extended service as well.

It seems that you got a well known video chip problem
I am not sure but following this thread from other forum, you may try this solution:

"I had the same problem with dv2000 !!

In fact, in most of these cases, the problem is with the solder connection of the graphics card mounted on the motherboard. some people suggest to use a heat gun to heat the graphics card and reestablish soldering (quite unmanageable for me as i have no equipments)

Yesterday, my hp started working like a miracle. What i did was simply:

1) put the laptop on a bed or a similar surface to close the air openings below
2) wait some time (15-30 min or 1hour) and let it get warm enough
3) restart.
it worked for mine. hope it works for you too.. the laptop seems stable and does not give any more beeps (for now).. good luck ! "

I have 2 dv2000's both with this great issue and my ability to use the extended warrenty ended in March. Look on ebay and you will find a bunch of shops advertised that will fix the issue for around a hundred bucks or less. some ask to send in the whole laptop and others just the mobo. I'm going with one that just wants the mobo and runs about 78.00 for repair with 30 day warrenty. Some offer as much as 90 days. I hadn't heard about the solder issue though, I'm going to have a look at that before i send them off. Army trained me to solder so maybe I can save a few bucks. Good Luck!
