Question internet connection question
Hello,

I am about to purchase a new laptop, probably from Dell. My household uses DSL through a wired connection versus wifi. It looks like the laptop I am going to purchase doesn't have a connection or "card" thingy to plug the dsl into. I have an option to purchase a wireless router that I guess I plug into the modem. Well, there are 5 other users in the house that utilize the wired connection and none of them want to purchase and use a wirless network.

So, my question is....is there such a thing as a modem that has "plugs" for both lan line and wireless routers. I know we will still be sharing the same connection and what not, but I really don't have the money to set up a new line just for a wireless internet connection.

I need it because I am a full time college student with all four classes being online. I am also a mother of a 2 yr old who obviously cannot be left unattended and my computer is in my room and my daughter and I are always in the living room...so I need and want a laptop. Originally, I was just going to buy extra wire and an extender so I could just unplug the connection from my computer in my room and extend the wire into the livingroom to use the internet on my laptop from there.

So anyway, now I don't know how to go about this. Is there a modem (oh I use Verizon Service and Modem now) that will plug in a lan and wireless router, or does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that could solve my little problem?

Thanks!

Wireless routers can take a RJ45 (the regular wired internet cable) cable from your modem and pass the connection onto wireless.
Wireless modems also always have 4-6 RJ45 connections. I don't know about the quality of the Verizon box, but I'd think you're better off leaving the modem alone and just getting a wireless router.

Thanks for your reply.........it just dawned on me.....I think I meant to ask is if there is a modem that will connect to a wireless router AND a lan line router. I will be the one to only be using the wireless connection, the other members don't have the set up for wireless and don't want to.

AFAIK, wireless routers connect to the modem by cable(modem LAN port -> router WAN port), and only the computers connect to it by wireless connection. The router further has LAN ports, too, for you to connect it to computers by hard wire.
I don't see a reason for you not to just hard-wire a wireless router to the current modem. Are there no free plugs? Why get a new modem as well as a wireless router, when it's not needed?
