your cpu will tell you the socket you need, simply find that out by taking it out and looking at it and look for a motherboard within your price range so, the core 2 quad, core 2 duo and some other processors have LAND 775 or socket 775 that they fit into, then just get a motherboard that has a 775 socket, wack in the processor and start it up, the processor is the same, if its a 775 socket processor and you have a E8200 or core 2 duo, swap it out for something your prepared to pay for like celeron[very cheap] to core 2 quad extreme[if you want to jiggle your purse]

right then going by philips LS1400, took me a while to find out something. what you might be looking for is a mini ITX motherboard, or a m-ITX m/board

i'll put in the link to show you which one. im guessing the pc you have there is quite compact and similar in size to an acer X1700
there are some retailers that do trade in mini-ITX components, but not a lot of them, try googling mini-ITX and see if you come to any results for retailers

the one i found is http://www.mini-itx.com/store
and another is http://www.itx-wareshouse.co.uk

Can you post a picture of the power supply plug that plugs into the motherboard?

All the info I found on the Phillips-Freevents LS1600 indicated it had a micro ATX motherboard ECS Model 649-M7.

Look on the motherboard and somewhere there should be a marking with a make and model number.

It is most likely an ECS 649-M3 Rev. 1.0A

i think what i've seen is a motherboard with a 775 processor socket, now, you can get any aftermarket motherboard you like so long as it is a micro ATX and has a 775 processor socket. there are a lot of these boards on the market, if you compare your motherboard to this image and you find it is the same then you should have no problem finding a different/replacement motherboard
