I don't know, according to the Dell specs it should work. When you updated your BIOS, did you update to the latest BIOS available?

When you received the processor, did you check and make sure there were no bent pins?

Did you buy the processor on eBay or another auction site?

Compuvest is a pretty reliable seller so this is what I would suggest.

#1-Double check; Did you apply the proper amount of thermal compound? Is the processor cooler seated correctly on the board? Did you plug in the +12v auxiliary processor connector? (The +12 auxiliary processor connector should have 2 yellow wires, and 2 black wires).

If the answer to all of the above is YES, reinstall the old processor and see if the machine boots and runs. If the answer is YES then either the Dell specs are incorrect, or the processor is defective.

System runs fine with old processor, small "hicups", a little slower , but no error screens.

I really don't know what to tell you.

The Dell site indicates the processor should be supported. Cartainly the board is old enough if the specs had been changed I feel sure Dell would have posted the changes.

Your board is basically an Intel D865PERL board with a Dell proprietary BIOS. The D865PERL boards were one of the most stable boards Intel ever built, and I use one of the standard Intel D865 PERL boards in my workbench machine recovering data, etc. and never had any problems with that board or any Dell machines that came into the shop with the board used in the 4600 series.

Receiving a defective processor is rare especially a new processor, although it can happen. Normally, if you install an unsupported processor in a machine you will get nothing, sometimes a black screen with a flashing cursor, but northing else. I don't ever recall a blue screen with an unsupported processor.

Since the original processor boots and runs this eliminates a defective motherboard, and in my way of thinking either points to BIOS or a defective processor.

Well win2kpro I dont know what else to do either. Should I try another source for a processor, I did get this one very cheap.

Well now I have another problem. Installed recommended chipset v5.0 1012, A13. Now 3.0GHz processor wont run system, get yellow light on front panel. Old 2.4 processor runs fine. Bad processor for sure?

Not necessarily. I was typing and looking up some information, so I'll post what I was typing.

The only thing I can figure is the 3GHz. processor you have came out after Dell spec'd out the board.

What I was looking at is the processor you purchased has a CPU ID string of 0F29h. I was looking for a 2.8GHz. or 3.0GHz with HyperThreading that had a different CPU ID string.

The SL6Z5 (2.8GHz.) has a CPU ID string of 0F25h it has an 800MHz. FSB and a 512KB L2 cahe with Hyperthreading.

The SL7BK (3.0GHz.) has a CPU ID string of OF25h it has a 800MHz. FSB and a 512KB L2 cache with Hyperthreading.

Speed wise you would never notice the difference in a 2.8GHz. and a 3.0GHz. If I were going to try another processor, I would try one of the above with a different CPU ID string to see if BIOS recognizes it.

Specs on SL6Z5: http://processorfinder.intel.com/Det...px?sSpec=sl6z5

Specs on SL7BK: http://processorfinder.intel.com/Det...px?sSpec=sl7bk

What you might also do is go to the Dell site, and download and install the latest chipset driver they have available. Although a chipset driver is not normally associated with a processor, it does have a direct relationship since information from the BIOS is transferred through the chipset to the processor.

OK, I see now you have updated the chipset. Do you recall the date the chipset driver was posted at the Dell site?

Just as a precautionary measure go here;

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...1&DwnldID=8264

download the Intel chipset ID utility, and get a positive ID on your boards chipset.

Please post how the ID utility identifies your chipset., i.e. 865P, 865PE, etc.

Chipset ID shows 82865G/P/PE, however looked at stepping for original 2.4GHz processor shows C1. Looks like there aren't any 800MHz processors with C1 stepping other than 3.2GHZ.
SL6S5,SL6K7 plus a few others are compatible but all are 533MHz FSB.

Also 2.4 original ID string is 0f27h
