which driver for WLAN ??
Hi
I read the post asking for complete information about hardware etc but I dont know how to find it all, I hope the info I have got is sufficient to answer my query.
I have just reinstalled Windows and seem to have mislaid many things that were previously installed, one of which is my wireless connection.
The operating system is Windows XP home and Device Manager tells me that the Ethernet controller has a problem with no drivers.
Everest home edition tells me that a Realtek RTL 8185 Wireless LAN adapter is fitted to PCI slot 1.
Now the difficulty: The Realtek web site gives the following options for this model
IEEE 802 11 a/b/g
802 11 b/g
802 11 b/g single chip
802 11 b/g/n
802 11 n
802 11/b
WLAN AP/Gateway controllers
Which of these drivers should I use with a Netgear DG 834 G v3 ?

regards
phil

Hi
Computer has been cobbled together from bits and pieces, best described as generic.
Motherboard is Intel Rexburg 2 D845GERG2, definitely not a laptop. If it makes a difference the cpu is Intel pentium 4 2500mhz.
I was wondering what would happen if I downloaded all of these drivers, put them all in the same folder and see if Windows could decide.
Regards
phil

So this is really a PCI adapter card? There should be some manufacturer's identification on the card somewhere.

Hi
I had not really intended to dismantle the computer to identify the PCI card. What happens if I load each of these drivers int turn?
What will be the difference between the right driver and any other? Is it the difference between working well and just working, or working and not working?

Hi again
I decided to do the trial and error approach. Partial success !!
I now get the balloon saying wireless connected but I also get a dialogue box saying that Windows cannot configure the connection and refers me to an article on Wireless Zero Connection.
Before I try that I wondered if it would be something like a problem with my Firewall (Zonealarm free} that could be easier for me to understand.

It would seem you've found your driver.

You can go ahead and enable Wireless Zero Configuration (enable/start the service).

HiGr3iz
When I read the article about WZC it looked as if it might lead to later difficulty. Is the auto fix which is linked to the article completely reversible so that I can return to my present state (using a wire to the modem) if all does not go well?

Phil, I'm not sure what article you are reading.

The wireless NIC is totally independent of the wired NIC.

Hi Gr3iz
The article I read was no.871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge base. I looked there because that was what the Wireless connection repair wizard suggested I did.
Now that the drivers have been installed the Wireless card appears to be working, The balloon at bottom right of the screen says there is a wireless connection in range and even though the wireless card can "talk" to the modem it will not connect. The repair wizard cannot repair the connection and referred me to the article.
If you type WZC in the help and support search box there is the article (If you type wireless zero connection it can find nothing!).
The connection repair wizard suggests that if I have enabled another program to manage this connection then I should use that software. Trouble is I have not to my knowledge enabled, or disabled, any program to manage wireless connections. As I started by saying Windows has been reinstalled and should not have any other software running except anti-virus and Zonealarm firewall, I have had problems with firewalls in the past and thought the answer might lie there.
Look forward to hearing from you
regards
phil

You are referring to the article that instructs you to disable other wireless management services (Intel, Dell, etc.)? If, instead of doing the automatic fix, you run through the "Let me fix it myself" steps, you will know which service you are disabling, that way you will know which to re-enable if you want to return to where you are right now.

I would hope a firewall would not prevent you from connecting to a wireless router/access point. You could try to disable the Zonealarm f/w briefly and use Window's f/w to verify.

Hi Gr3iz
I tried shutting down Zonealarm but still get the same message when I try "repair connection".
Looks like I will have to try WZC.
I will let you know how I get on, probably some time later tomorrow.

I was hoping Zonealarm wasn't the culprit here ... Good luck!

Hi Gr3iz
I had another thought overnight. I have added no software that might have "possessed" the wireless connection so whatever was causing the problem was already there, it seemed likely that the card was responding to the old Windows operating system which had now been replaced.
I uninstalled the card, searched for new hardware and reinstalled it. Perfect!!
Thank you for your help
regards
phil
