help hl-dt-st dvdrrw gsa-h20l ata stopped working...
HI,

I have a 32-bit HP Pavilion, a6030n, with an AMD 64 X2 dual core processor 4800+, 2 GHz, 2 GBs RAM, running on Vista. This system was 2 yrs. old in April, not ancient, has serve us well but suddenly, the hl-dt-st dvdrrw gsa-h20l ata is not functioning. I searched here and someone said to uninstall it because when you reboot, Vista will re-install. LOL
It is weird. I'm getting very conflicting info, the Device Manager said the drives are updated, the Hardware Diagnostic Tools didn't register it. WMP wouldn't show anything in the drive...

SO, I uninstalled it. <MOAN> Suddenly, I've decided to hold off on everything because I can't even figure out who makes this. HELP PLEASE!!!!!

OK, from the part# I assume this is a dvd rw type drive. Drives do fail. Have you installed any new burning software lately?

The quickest and easiest way to test is to swap in a known good drive. These are <$30 at newegg. You need to know what interface ie IDE type or sata type.

I think that sent w/out finishing. I can't see the thread here? OK, 1st, thanks for answering. Then, no new software installed, 3rd where do I find the IDE or sata? It did say ATA and the end of the part # but it was too long to put in here.

THANKS AGAIN,
Gina

Open the case and look. IDE is a flat ribbon type cable. Sata is a much smaller 3/8" wide cable.
