I didn't think ccleaner asked for $$. Where did you get it? I googled ccleaner and the first (sponsored?) link is for c-cleaner.net. I don't believe this is the real thing. You may have been duped here. The real software is by Piriform.

Here is the correct website to download CCleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com/

Now. Do not use the Registry Cleaning part of the program because I have heard many problems that people have had. I use it any way as I back up my registry with it and the be honest I can usually fix what it breaks some way or other because I am a bit more daring. personally I have never had a problem with CCleaner registry cleaning part but other programs I have.

I also got it by Google. Probably the same one you brought up. Since, I have deleted it. jack-o-bytes has provided the correct site. http://www.ccleaner.com/. Should I still go ahead and use it since my laptop is running a lot slower lately? Does it determine which start up programs should be deleted or do I still have to make that decision. I've got a lot and not sure about which should be deleted.

You may want to download and run MalwareBytes' Anti-malware, too. You may have gotten something evil from that bogus ccleaner.

I would read over this thread again, the only thing you can do with your slow computer using a registry cleaner is make it slower and probably wind up reformatting it and reinstalling Windows, but we will let you learn.

No and it has nothing to do with startup programs either. This handy little appelet will show you what is there and I would remove everything except for antivirus and antispyware:

Rich-M, If you had read my post all the way through you would have noticed that I said NOT to use the registry cleaning part of ccleaner just the temporary file cleaner. Here are the programs I use to tune my computer when it is running slow.

1) CCleaner www.ccleaner.com
2) Auslogics Registry Defrag (optional but I have never had any problem with it) http://www.auslogics.com/en/software...efrag/download
3) Defraggler http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

Also when you search goole notice the top link(s) are always in a pale yellow box. These are adverts and 90% of the time when searching for a program these are not the correct ones.

I do know that, but you also stated no one should use it, but that you do because you are "more daring" and I guess my issue was with "don't do what I do but do as I say" and you have to realize, that could make many users actually do it and hose their systems.

If your computer slows down that is the last thing to do and is in fact more likley the cause of the issues. Worse obviously because you say you do use the reg cleaner yourself. When a pc slows down we look for condition of the hard drive perhaps by running utilities to check that including checkdisk, and then manipulate startup and that is after running good antispyware and antivirus software. The very last thing I would suggest is "cleaning" a hard drive which doesn't need it and can create worse issues, defragging the registry which really does not need it but then running defragmenter on the hard drive would be a good idea.

Please realize how users see posts on this or any other forum and be aware as none of us including you wants others to mangle their systems from something written here.
