Powering Off
Recently my laptop running XP doesn't want to power off after I click "turn off computer". No music, no nothing. Hopefully someone can tell me whats going on and how to fix it. Also, because of this I can not do a re-boot. I can press the power button on the lap top and it shuts down. Thanks for any help. Chuck

I presume that because you can't reboot you can't update windows due to it installing as you shut down. Have you tried that?

This just started happening but I did do a windows update only a couple of weeks ago. The problem is that I can not shut down using the normal procedure.

I am not 100% sure but it could be a virus.

Download and run ccleaner to clean any temporary files
Then do a complete virus scan to see if it finds anything.

I downloaded and ran ccleaner. However, it does nothing unless you purchase the full software. Not sure if I can trust this software if I purchase it or not. What's up with ccleaner?

As a follow up to my last post. ccleaner indicates I have thousands of errors and should optimize my computer by purchasing the full version. It list many start up programs that perhaps should be deleted. But, how does one know what is safe to delete? I did a restore point in case I start deleting things I know nothing about. Will I be able to restore all deleted files and programs if my computer doesn't run the same after deleting all these errors?

Can you use the shutdown at the Windows Security screen (<Ctrl><Alt><Del>)?

Haven't tried that but last night I did a full scan with my anti virus and was later able to shut down properly. I haven't shut down today but maybe I'm back on track. Do you know anything about ccleaner per my previous post?

I've never used it, but had always heard good things about it. I hadn't heard of any extortion tactics in reference to that product.

Whatever you do don't buy ccleaner and do not use the registry cleaner in it. It can and may well hose your entire system as will any reg cleaner.
Sounds like you solved issue so why not quit while ahead.

If it is asking you to buy a version it is a fake ccleaner. CCleaner is free. Also CCleaner will NOT loose you your whole system as I have been using it for about 2 years and I have NEVER had any problem with it. Simple.

You could be write about the attempt to sell, but you are wrong about system hosing. I completely hosed 2 client systems with it 2 years ago?
