Solved: Dead CD/DVD-ROM...?
I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but before I go buy a new one, I figured I'd check to see if there's something else I should try.....

Computer's been performing kinda poorly of late, and I'd recently added new camera and such and changed/upgraded software packages, so I decided to completely redo the system. I did not touch anything inside the case. Did a reformat and reinstall of windows the other night. Patched all up to date. CD-ROM worked fine. Installed and updated Norton 360, no problem.
Last night I went to continue (installing printer, camera, etc) and when I put a disc in the drive, nothing happened. Went to manually run the disc and 'my computer' did not show the drive as existing. Checked control panel. It shows the drive but marked with an error. Further info says the drivers were properly loaded but could not find the hardware. Tried unistalling and reinstalling the hardware to no avail. Same error. Also tried to update drivers, but was told 'could not find' -- it is an older, generic drive. Any suggestions other than replace?

Sound like a bad drive. Have you uninstalled and re installed?

I didn't physically uninstall it, but yes, I uninstalled and removed it via device manager multiple times.
What I haven't seen is the windows notifications of finding and installing the new hardware, but when I go back to device manager, it is there again after I refresh or reboot.
And now that I think about it, when I did the install I did get notices about the hardware and it wanting to go online to check for drivers (which it couldn't do as I hadn't reestablished a connection yet), but the drive did still work initially.

I got a new DVD-ROM drive, but the same issue exists. "My Computer" doesn't see it. Device Manager shows it there but not working. Same error (41) as with the old drive. So apparently it isn't the drive. I even tried a new cable with the same result, so I know its not the cable or the connections. And since it is a slave to my HDD, it doesn't appear to be from the MB either, since the HD still boots just fine.

Apparently the CD/DVD-ROM is not dead....
see my post from this morning. I need some other directions since a new drive did the exact same thing.

Well, I guess technically everything was disconnected when I reformatted the drive and reinstalled windows. But I didn't change any hardware. And hadn't done anything in between when the drive was working and when it wasn't.
I did look at the error41 listing (from a link in someone else's post) info and I thought it just talked about reinstalling drivers and such, but I'll check the site again. Thanks.

I've done evereything that is on the microsoftsupport site for the error code (41) multiple times, to no avail. I've also had my Norton 360 run a registry check and correct a registry error (seemingly related to this drive), but when I tried again to unistall and reinstall the drive, still the same thing happens.
I've also verified that the drive shows up in the BIOS as well, just windows doesn't find it.

Well, using links from another thread with a similar problem, I've managed to solve this issue myself.
