" no audio output device is installed"
I have a Toshiba Satellite U400 series laptop, with windows vista 32 bit home premium. Its a year old and few days ago this problem propped up. I re-installed the audio driver but still no-fix. I also did restore to a month before and still no-fix. Showed the laptop to an "EXPERT" and after doing the same thing that I did, he said I would have to format the whole hard disk drive. Please tell me there is another way out!!!

Did you roll back or update the driver? Is there any unknown device in the device manager? I always prefer, easy way to find all OEM brand Laptop/Desktop computer problems from their own official website. Thet are giving excellent support. Most of them have online chat support.
Here is the link for latest driver for you Laptop:

Did you recently install a service pack Windows update? There have been issues with each SP in Vista. See if this helps:

I also recently saw malware kill the soundcard and I could not believe it so you could try scanning with Superantispyware and Malwarebytes if the first one gives you no help.

Hi Rock,
I tried the link you provided and followed it step by step but while trying to install the latest driver, a Error message popped up saying " Driver installation failed: Could not find the media device for this driver ". I will also have a look on the toshiba support center.

Hey Rich,
I followed your link as well but still couldnt fix it. I downloaded both the spyware and malware programs but nothing major was picked up while scanning.

There are no unknown devices in the device manager. But I don't know how to get to bios settings to check if onboard Audio devices is enabled.

Sorry!

After Pressing power bitton tap F1 continuously until you see "entering setup" to enter bios:
Here is a listing for bios entry for all systems:

Ok.... I went into setup..... and there was nothing like onboard audio devices....the closest one was in the Advanced Tab and was HDMI-CEC and that was enabled..

Usually under pci devices there should be an onboard video card to check.

AWW Man....didnt want to hear that....lol. I have been checking on other forums too. Can you please enlighten me on the topic of having to install microsoft's UAA HD Audio class driver before installing the sound driver?? Is it true or is that something that is required for WindowsXP?
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi guys...

Just wanted to keep you posted on the latest. After fiddling around with a few more softwares, the speaker icon shows the green bars next to it. I noticed that when i play any kind of sounds , it reflects in the volume mixer page. The volume levels go up and down as the song plays but still no volume on speakers or headset. I also fiddled around with the head set jack connector on the laptop side hoping for a loose connection/short. Any ideas on what to do next???
