Trouble booting from CD on Acer laptop
I have an Acer 1640z
I can't boot from the CD ROM
I've checked the BIOS - the first device it should boot to should be the CD Drive
But it just doesn't want to know
I've tried several different discs now - nothing works

Is there a special key to press?
I've tried F8, nothing
F2: takes me to BIOS
Anything else?

What could be the problem?
I want to install Ubuntu to try out - if I don't get anywhere, is there any other way I can install withouth booting from a CD?

Thanks

OM

There are two methods. The first is a virtual machine, which will let you test in a virtual environment whilst within Windows, but performance is not representative as you only use virtualised hardware. Fortunately, there's a way of installing Ubuntu on your hard drive from within Windows: Wubi.

http://wubi-installer.org/

Give that a try.

The best thing about it is that if you find you don't like Ubuntu and want to remove it, all you do is go to Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features and uninstall it through there. Have fun!
