I would limit my use to as little as possible. If the power supply is doing what I believe it's doing it could recover with a "surge" that could damage the board and possibly other components.

When you pull the old power supply, weigh it. You can tell a good deal about the quality of a power supply by the weight. A good quality power supply (550-650 watts) will weigh approximately 5-6 pounds. See how much your old unit weighs.
