Install new cpu and windows freezes
I am curently running windows xp on a Lenovo K210 desktop. I am trying to install a intel q8400 cpu into a g31t-lm2 motherboard and everytime it gets past POST the computer freezes. When it shows windows on the screen with little green loading bar it freezes, also i tried to install windows 7 and when the " press any key to boot from cd/dvd" dialog comes up i press a key and it freezes. I cant find any info or support for the g31t-lm2 motherboard. Any suggestions on why this is happening, how to fix, and if the board even supports 64bit OS.

More likely you can't put that chip in the computer. Even if the motherboard suppoers the chips I'm sure it's been modified and the BIOS is custom since it's an OEM PC. Most OEM computers aren't very upgradable since they are made to work with a very narrow range of CPUs.

Two things, first is to make sure the CPU is not overheating so make sure the heatsink is correctly installed, sometimes they are tricky to fully seat correctly.

Next would be to update to the latest Lenovo K210 BIOS, using the old CPU. Chances are the board doesn't support the CPU as mentioned above but if Lenovo has released BIOS updates, which they do occasionally to add/improve support, they may have added support for the Q8400.

If you have a 64 bit CPU then you should be able to run a 64 bit operating system.

On the Lenovo K210 specs I saw, the machine came with a E2180 processor which has an 800MHz. FSB. The Q8400 has a 1333MHZ. FSB so I seriously doubt Lenovo would have a BIOS update to support that processor.

Possibly, but the G31 chipset is capable of 1333MHZ FSB bus speeds.

The chipset is capable of it, but I doubt Lenovo would allow their BIOS to have that much flexibility.

I've looked on lenovos page and ecs's page (manufacturer of mobo) and neither have an update. another thing that confuses me is why isnt there any info on the g31t-lm2 mobo on the manufacturers site?

If the board is made for Lenovo then it becomes Lenovo's responsibility to post any all info they seem fit. As most big brand builders do, they don't post most of that info, they simply do not want users upgrading their units and having to deal with the extra headache of having their customers upgrade their units - in essence you get what you pay for.

By the way, Lenovo does post BIOS updates on their site: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en...?CategoryID=23
Not all changes of the BIOS are posted.
