Solved: HD replacement question
Maxtor 541Dx 5400rpm,20GB,ultraATA/100 3.5 series with 1GB RAM died and I would like to replace it with something cheap. PC is a 2002 Gateway
.
I have found on the net some refurbished and recertified ones either IDE or SATA 40GB
with 2MB RAM for approx $17.

Which should I consider or not. I really don't want to spend much as my son gave this
pute to me and all I use it for is email and reading stuff on the net.

I will load WXP home on it, version 2002, and then get AVG and then update at MS.

This is the 1st time I have done this so need some help. I have the Maxtor out and
ready to buy and install another.
Thanks

For $38 you can get a brand new drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136457

Its an 80GB, with a 7200 RPM spindle speed, 8MB of cache, and numerous other improvements over an old 40Gb refurbed drive. And a 3 year warranty to stand behind it rather then a so-called refurbed drive may simply have been reformatted and nothing else.

It should handle it no problem and give you a performance boost over the old drive.

And yes all you should need to do is plug it in and install XP.
