How many sticks of ram total ?

Which model motherboard ? What is the max it will support ?

Try with just 1 stick of ram.

I'm guessing at this point that you have 2 - 1024 MB modules installed.

Remove one module and then see if the computer starts up with the other module. If it does, see how much RAM is listed.

Repeat the process with the other module.

I'm guessing at this point that one module is bad.

Your computer may require low-density modules, but you've installed high-density modules.

To reduce or eliminate the risk of module incompatibilty, it's always best to install matching modules in all slots.

Open msconfig [start>run and type in "msconfig" without quotes] On the boot tab, click the advanced options. See if there is a checkmark in the max memory box. If there is, remove the checkmark.

That's one that I didn't know about. There's always something new to learn. Thanks.

I do not know why it sometimes defaults to ON. I can see a use for limiting the ram however it should always default to OFF.

After reading your instructions in post #7, I decided to check the setting in my 2 desktops. It was unchecked.
