Need advice on changing parts to this old computer..
Ok, I recently had Windows ME on this old computer I had put up. Well, I decided to knock the dust off of it and put it to use so I wiped ME off of it and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP. It doesn't work too bad but its not all that great either. It freezes alot and is sometimes slow. It's a Dell Dimension LS66CX, Intel Celeron Processer, 128mb of ram, 564 Mhz. I was wondering if I could switch my harddrive, rams, and other things to this other computer i have sitting up. Its a little older but I like the fact that it has more room for a slave hard drive, more card slots (like for a mode), and 2 CD-ROM slots. It's a Gateway Micro ATX BRY GP&i- 600SE (thats the model number) with a Pentium lll and it says Intel Inside but I'm not sure what that means. Thats all the information on it I see at this moment. It has usb slots and things. I'm a noob at these things sorry. I guess I just want to know if it would run good, or even better if I switched my rams and stuff to it. Sorry if I confused anyone. Thanks in advance.

does it go online

Scan with www.crucial.com and see what memory it will support
if not - you should be able to put the model in and get an answer

You really need 512MB with XP , with only 128mb it will run very slow..

thomasman:

That Dell Dimension that you're wanting to upgrade and install XP in, are you sure the model number is LS66CX? I can't find it anywhere.

Is there a sticker with a service tag number on that Dell?

----------------------------------------------------------------

With that Intel Celeron processor having such a slow speed, that's going to be a big performance bootleneck with using XP.

I also doubt if that computer will support more than 256 - 384 MB of RAM, based on the processor in it.

Yep. The Dell Dimension L566cx supports a maximum of 512 MB of RAM and uses PC100 SDRAM modules.

256 MB modules sell for $19.98 at the MEMORYX site. I've been buying modules for older desktops and laptops at this site for over a year, so I can attest to its reliability.

I'm currently running XP Home SP3 in an old Dell OptiPlex GX110 desktop with an Intel Pentium III 800 MHz processor and 512 MB of PC100 SDRAM and have it tweaked for maximum performance. It runs okay for basic computing use, but it'll lag if I try to run anything that's too system-hungry.

Thank you for your responses! It did go online but when I got up this morning, I guess Charter caught me using 2 modems on 1 account because now I have to enter my account pin, pass, blah blah. Ill just have to get a router. And yeah it does run pretty slow at times but I just couldn't stand the Windows ME anymore because its way to unstable and it was getting kinda annoying freezing every 20 mins. So does that mean that my pc has 512 mb or 128 mb? I'm kinda confused on that part. And would it maybe be better for me to switch it to that Gateway I was talking about?

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

What's listed at the bottom of the General tab for the amount of RAM?

I'm not at home at this moment but when I was at home, I went ahead and switched my hard drive and rams to that old gateway and I think it actually gained a little ram. I don't know if thats possible or not .I don't remember right at this second, but I I'm sure it gained 30-50 more if i remember right. I just didnt know if it would be better because it was an older computer. The Dell was made for Windows ME while the Gateway was made for Windows 98. I know that probably don't mean much but it operates the same and like I said, I think it gained a little ram. I have been watching movies on it like crazy.
