Drive Image XML in Windows 7 Question
I have used Drive Image XML for several years and never had a problem.

Now, when installed on Windows 7, it requires that what appears to be a security feature be disabled while running the program and remembering to turn it back on when completed.

I have tried this a couple of times (unsuccessfully because explanation describes using "Vista" settings which are different). Even if I could do it, I am not inclined to turn anything like this off to run any program.

I downloaded "Macrium Reflect" yesterday and it is easy to run with no requirements prior to running it but I am wondering if the program provides reliable images. It certainly is much faster than Drive Image XML.

Any opinions?

Thanks

Is the program simply asking you to turn off the UAC in windows 7 to run Drive Image XML because if its simply asking you to turn the UAC off then I would say just turn it off, I've never liked the UAC anyways, if thats all it is asking then it will not hurt the computer if you turn it off while you run drive image xml or even if you leave it off from there on out. I havent tried the program you are talking about, however Acronis True Image is a great program but isnt free like Drive Image XML is.

It is asking me to turn off the UAC and I thought that it might be something vital to computer security and was reluctant to do it.

Also, their instructions on how to do it are wrong but I found it once and turned it off, made a backup and then forgot to turn it back one.

When I rebooted and went back in to turn it on again, it was already on again so it must turn on upon reboot.

I guess I better find out what it does in Windows 7 and then find a way to leave it off permanently.

Thanks for the help. I will not worry so much about security being effected now.

I have used Drive Image XML for years after some failures of recent versions of Ghost and Acronis when I really needed backups badly.

That made me look for something that would work better on my computer and since Drive Image XML is written by Runtime Software and they do disk recovery, I gave it a try. I have made a lot of file and drive recoveries with it over the years without even one failure so I would like to keep going if possible.

Just wanted to say that few years back I had purchased and then returned Acronis as I had some complaints. I have used DriveImageXML number of times and have never had any issues. I use it from UBCD4Win though, not directly. Works like a charm on XP. Now I am getting a Win7 laptop and the first thing I would do is use it to make an image.

go into the control panel and I believe under user accounts you can turn it off for good. It was part of microsofts plan to help programmmers write good code and help keep users safer. Really I just find it stupidly annoying all it ever did was block the stuff I really wanted to do and would tell me things like im not privilleged enough to run check disk even as an admin.

If UAC is the only thing holding you back from drive image xml just turn UAC off its not really that important, we all lived many years without it.

To answer your question, macrium works fine. I would not trust ANY imaging app until you validate your ability to restore an image. The first time I used macrium, I did a restore and it worked perfectly.

If you simply want to make an image backup, then macrium will do the job. If you want more options ie restore to raid arrays, clone drives, etc; then I would go with acronis true image.

Acronis true image is like snap-on tools; the standard by which others are judged.
