Manufacturing Mode on Dell Inspiron 9400
I recently bought a replacement battery off ebay and it has 12 months warranty.

As soon as i plugged it in the laptops fan turned up and then the system turned off (was running on ac power).

When i tried to turn it on the bios gave a 2 sec flash and then the screen said

System in Manufacturing Mode Level [CA]

To return to normal press Fn+X - (not exact wording)

Ive tried pressing F2 whilst start up, ive tried the Fn + X, ive tried Fn + F, but no luck.....

Please Help!!

Check the battery status light —

If the battery status light flashes orange or is a steady orange the battery charge is low or depleted. Connect the computer to an electrical outlet.

If the battery status light flashes green and orange, the battery is too hot to charge. Shut down the computer, disconnect the computer from the electrical outlet, and then let the battery and computer cool to room temperature.

If the battery status light rapidly flashes orange, the battery may be defective.

See if this method will turn off that message

It is worth the money to use Dell branded batteries when available.

I think what happened was your cmos battery did not hold the bios settings while the laptop had no battery installed and no AC power
Sounds like your cmos battery may need replaced also

I found this answer to the "mode" problem in the Dell forums,

Quote:
Try the following.

If the system is found to be in manufacturing mode, execute the following steps to return the system to normal operation:

1. Press "FN + X" key combination at the POST splash screen to pull system out of manufacturing mode.

2. After pressing "FN + X" key combination, REBOOT the system.

3. At POST following reboot, you should see the standard BIOS splash screen with "DELL" in big blue letters / white progress bar on the bottom of the screen

4. If you do not see the DELL BIOS splash screen, REBOOT and repeat step # 1

5. Once the system is out of manufacturing mode, change the SETUP boot post setting back to "MINIMAL"

To do this, execute the following steps:

1. Power on system

2. Immediately press F2 to enter CMOS - BIOS settings.

3. "Use Alt+P" key combination twice to access BIOS settings page 3 of 7

4. Change boot post from "MINIMAL" to "THOROUGH" (this will increase the cycle time of the BIOS "Splash" screen)

5. Save BIOS settings, REBOOT

6. At BIOS "splash" screen, check for "***system is in manufacturing mode***" message. (If you see the standard BIOS splash screen with "DELL" in big blue letters with a progress bar on the bottom of screen, then the system is NOT in manufacturing mode.)

Still No Luck
Thanks....but still nothing.....

I dont understand why the laptop will work fine on AC power....

Yet this battery forces it to go into Manufacturing Mode Level [CA].

So anyone else got any ideas??

I cant enter the system setup, i dont get enough time to press F2.

Help....

I have contacted a Dell employee to look at the issue, they may jump in here and help.

Hi.

CMOS battery may be a problem. Try this if you can:
  1. Put the (presumably) dead Dell battery back in.
  2. Flash the BIOS.
  3. replace the CMOS battery. (optional. you can skip this step for testing purposes.)
  4. Try the 3rd party battery again.
