Angry Solved: Maxtor External Harddrive, file management
I'm trying to get my files in better order in Maxtor. I find it difficult to drag the files to folders. Why can't I get the new folders closer to the files I want to put in it, or vice/versa? The files that are farther away from the folder get lost before getting where I want to put them. What am I doing wrong? I've read the users guide and it was no help. Can you help me? lilart

Are you getting errors trying to move files? I don't understand what the problem is. Your data should be in folders like My Documents, My Music, etc. You can create as many sub files and folders there as you want.

I don't have any errors. I have many folders already, but can't seem to control the new files I want to add to folders already there, or files to be put in "new folder". New folders are not always near the files I want to add. I have little control over the files when trying to drag them through several columns of files. By the time I get them near the folder, I've already lost the files. I've put many files in folders, but can't understand why all of a sudden when viewing my files in Maxtor they don't act right. The files move too fast and I have little control. I would welcome a window saying what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestion will be welcomed. lilart

Try xplorer˛ lite, a free Windows Explorer replacement.

It's easier to use than Windows Explorer because it's a dual pane explorer. So you can have two folders open at the same time which makes it easier moving files between folders.

Why dont you open two explorer windows
One window open at the source folder containing the files you wish to move
and the other window open for the destination folder
The drag and drop from one window/folder to the other.

Use Copy/Paste or Cut/Paste instead of trying to drag files and folders through a complicated tree structure. As Jack said, you can also open multiple windows and drag and drop files that way.

This problem has nothing to do with the brand name of your hard drive. It's simply a function of the Windows operating system. You have total control over where to copy and paste your data files. It sounds like this is simply a physical/technical issue of trying to drag and drop.

Thanks so much, fellows. I appreciate your help. Stantley, I'll try that if I can't do it any other way. Jack, I can't open the 2nd Explorer when I have Maxtor open. DoubleHelix, I'll give the Cut/Paste a try. If any of you can tell me how I can open multiple windows to drag and drop in an open Maxtor, I'd like to know how. I've used drag and drop in Maxtor many times since having it and it is loaded with both files and folders. I've never had problems before. It has 200 GBs. I don't think it's full. Thank you all again. lilart

What exactly is the "Maxtor" that you keep referring to? Is this some type of special program? If it's just the brand name of the drive, it has absolutely no relevance to moving files.

You open two windows by opening multiple instances of Windows Explorer or double-clicking on My Computer a second time. I don't know how to explain it any simpler. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Sorry about that--I thought everyone was familiar with Maxtor, an external hard drive that I store all the back-up files. I'm trying to get rid of duplicate files and put files into proper folders in the external drive. I've put files in folders in the external drive before, but I'm having a devil of a time getting them in now. I'd love to have a Windows Explorer in the external drive, but it doesn't have one that I can see. Any other ideas? Thanks again, lilart

Click on My Computer, the external drive should show up there.

Windows Explorer is a program in Windows. It's just a way to browse files and folders.

I know where to open the external hard-drive--In My Computer, I know where to open Windows Explorer when I am working on my internal computer. Right now I want to get my files that are on the external hard-drive in better order. I have too many files that I've sent to it that need to be put in folders that are already in the external hard-drive. When I tried to drag them to the folder and even when I cut and paste them, I have a hard time controlling the curser that is dragging or trying to get to the folder to paste. When dragging or just going to the folder is difficult because it doesn't stop where I want it to. When I stop it scoots to the new row or father. Then I have to go hunting to see where it went. This didn't happen before when I didn't have so many loose files. As I said, I read my Maxtor User's guide and it didn't have anythng about files and folders. I've been on-line to Maxtor and couldn't find any answers to my problems. So, that's when I turned to Tech Support Guy, and I'm still not sure what to do. unless I try what Standly suggested, but that might not work in an external hard-drive. Any other suggestions are welcome, Thanks lots. lilart

It's just a data drive. It's a location to store data. You work with the files on it the same way you would your internal hard drive. Does it show up as a drive letter in My Computer? Does it show up as a drive letter in Windows Explorer?

Is this some time of network attached storage? Are you accessing it through a special interface?

If I could move my files in Windows Explorer it would be simple. But I haven't found any way of having two window, one with the folders and one with the files that I could just drag across like I have done many many times while on my computer. My external is my "G" drive. I am not linked to any other computers. I'm closing for tonight. I appreciate all the suggestions and hope I get something tomorrow that can solve my problem. Thanks again. lilart

If you could post a screen shot of what you're looking at it might help us understand the problem a little better.
