Solved: Brand New HP D1660 Printer not working
I have just tried to install a brand new D1660 onto a laptop

NEW - HP D1660 Printer
NEW - USB Printer cable

Laptop - Toshiba Vista
Installed using Supplied CD, connected printer when requested
Error reported on spooler application halted
finished full install all HP software
restarted laptop and switched on/off printer

printer not working
Printer properties and driver look ok
print test page -
Immediately get a message - test page failed to print
Using the HP solution Center was able to see status of ink carts and also did print-off an alignment page .....

-------------------------------SO ------------------------------ try a new driver on a new laptop
Laptop - SONY Vista
downloaded just the basic driver from HP website
installed onto a Sony Laptop - vista
connected when requested - same error on spooler stopped
same error on printing a test page

in fact with the printer disconneted and right click properties - print test page - get the same error message.

Other Netwroked printers - still work off the sony laptop OK

event view shows

Event Viewer System
The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Event Viewer Applcation
Faulting application spoolsv.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791956c, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a7a6, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0001830c, process id 0x7c, application start time 0x01ca9e744a552fa4.

----------------------------------------------
so do we have a driver issue or do you think its a faulty printer or printer cable
The fact I printed the alignmnent page is confusing

I will probably take the printer back tomorrow .......but a bit suspect, of the application error message whilst installing the driver

Just an idea. Have you tried downloading the basic driver and extracting the files then installing the driver manually?

I have had to do this with a few hp printers on windows 7. I just have the driver extracted and plug in the printer. When it asks for a driver, I point it at the unzipped folder and it installs.

OK I downloaded the basic file and run the .exe which then runs the application for the printer

To try that
1) Do i just delete the printer - or do I need to do something else to remove from the PC - I was going to do a system recovery to yesterday to get rid of the install completely
2) how to extract the drivers from the .exe file ?

I have done a system recovery on the Sony Laptop to this morning
then
Plugged the printer in and found new hardware
The laptop run the installing new hardware
- then looked at windows update
- could not find the driver and ask to be pointed to the CD
pointed to CD
New hardware Installed ready for use
BUT
Nothing in printers
Rebooted
found new hardware
repeated the instal
BUT
remote error occured
on the laptop

Microsoft windows - dialogue box
Quote:
Spooler Subsystem App stopped working and was closed
A problem caused the application to stop working correctly windows will notify you if a solution is available
(run the MS fixit utility - but did not work)

Printer in printer set but still not working

I think I will try on my XP laptop tomorrow and then take back

You need to right click on the .exe file and use something like winrar or 7zip to unzip or extract the file.

7zip is open source ie free to use so I would just use that one.

i tried that using IZarc http://www.izarc.org/ and would not extract the file, just add to archive
but this wont open ???

I downloaded 7zip and that extracted the program OK

Now to try the install again.... ,maybe in safemode

still Not working..... I tried a different Cable - still problem
So I returned the item

New B1660
and guess - what exactly the same error -

so I got out my OLD XP laptop and it installed and worked fine

Called HP Support
its a vista operating system problem (even though its on two laptops - ) and outside the boundry of help - open google and search for the error message

they did work with me to
1) Set the printer up to not use a spooler
2) retart the service - print spooler

they suggested I download a registry cleaner ....... at which point we stopped....

so in summary

tried two different printers
two different cable
works on XP
Does not work on Vista
error messages as above

so i'm off to do some googling ...... any suggestions as my other half needs it working for tomorrow !!!!

The only other thing I could suggest would be to uninstall all hp software/drivers. Plug in the printer and see if windows update will find a MS driver for the printer.

I have a very old HP 880C that does not get installed by win7 during setup. After the os is installed, I have windows update search for a driver and it finds and installs one.

Other than that, the only thing would be to go with a different model of printer.

Well - I tried the HP print diagnostic - and it reported a driver issue - and the fix - install correct driver
I called HP again and tried a few things, like using a 990c driver and nothing fixed it
so apparently they are going to try the D1660 in the lab and see what happens ......

looking at the status on the "installing new hardware" - looks like it already goes onto windows update for a driver

I think we may be close to that

Cant get system restore to open a dialogue box now - if i try and run a 2nd time says its already running

Thanks

in conclusion
we took the printer back last night
But the shop ( Staples - for service ) agreed to allow me to try other printers on display today

so Iooked at the display units - download the basic drivers for them all and returned with the laptop to the store lunchtime today

we tried a HP all-in-1 which may fit in the space although a but larger , Installed and worked straight away
SO,
I thought I would try the D1660 again as they had tested that morning and it worked on windows 7
still did not install
the tech guy at the shop - suggested
run as admin and also in XP compat mode
so we tried that
and we got a lot more info this time about the failure - it was trying to load into registry and could not find a lot of directories needed for the installation ...

so the device seems to work on Windows7 on XP BUT NOT on vista

once we have measured the space at the school for the printer we will go back and get the F2400 series all in one

once again

for customer service and support at Staples in the UK

EDIT
well HP did call me back
Quote:

They did test in the lab and could find nothing wrong -
and they called me back
and because of the inconvenience they sent me a colour cartridge which arrived today
