Unhappy New cpu wont boot
Hello
Yesterday I bought a new CPU (AMD 5000+ AM2). Before I bought it I carefully checked the MoBo's (MSI K9N Neo V2) CPU support list if it would support it. And it does. However, after I got home, I unplugged my old processors and it's heatsink (while being grounded using a wristband connected to the chassi). I then placed the new cpu in the AM2 slot and flipped down the lever. I attached the heatsink aswell. I then without thinking trashed my old cpu as I thought this will work right away. I attached the cables to the computer and flipped the switch to my PSU. Then I tried booting the computer. I kept the chassi open to see what would happen, and the fans for my PSU, GPU and CPU started spinning. I could hear something more power up. But the screen was still black. Nothing else happens and it just keeps going like that. I red up on the web and then I attempted to reset the CMOS by moving the 3 pin jumper between the pins (as instructed on a youtube tutorial). tried booting again. Same as earlier.
And here I am, stuck with an unbootable computer. help?

Thanks ahead

Been there. A few times. Be sure to disconnect the power and remove the battery while using that reset jumper for the BIOS. What is the make/model?

Check the board for any jumpers that may set multiplier speed. What processor was there before? There may also be a voltage jumper.

Be sure that you connected the CPU fan to the right board connector. Many boards won't run if they detect that the fan is absent, and it is sometimes easy to connect to the case connector instead of the CPU fan one.

There is still hope.

I've checked he MoBO for any additional jumpers and the Manual only speaks of BIOS settings for voltage. And nothing of any multiplier jumper. The MoBo is a MSI K9N Neo V3 MS-7369.

The previous CPU was an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (codename orleans). The CPU fan is connected to the same place the previous fan was connected to. And it's spinning, thats got to be a good sign, right?

I also disconnected the power cable and flipped the power switch on the back a few times as I heard that would empty the battery. I then made the clear CMOS proceedure again, but the computer still wont boot properly. All lights and fans starts, but no beep from the MoBo and a black screen.

Is either my CPU or MoBo broken? Or whats the issue?

Thanks for the fast response,
Foxtra

It's a matter of trying everything. The last time I had those symptoms, it was because the RAM sticks apparently got tapped when I put my hands in there and they had to be removed and reseated. I'll take a look at your board, but I'm out of ideas at the moment. All I can say is to triple-check everything, even things you don't expect to be involved.

What has been going on in BIOS? Has it recognized the CPU and are its parameters right?

I'll check the ram and other components, but as you said I doubt it has anything to do with the issue? Everything was working when I was using the previous CPU, it became slighty overheated because of dust in the heatsink. I replaced the CPU because I was tired of only one core and the low clock speed. The MoBo should be back to factory settings, now that I've used the clear CMOS jumper. And I dont have any other computer to test the hardware in, otherwise I would.

The reason I'm trying to fix this myself is becouse I dont really feel atm like paying loads of money for a service station to just check everything and put in some new expensive equippment.

I appreciate your help, really, and if you think I should go to the service station I will.

Thanks ahead.

Alright, I've reinserted the RAM and checked all power cables. Yet nothing....
It's starting to feel pretty dead atm.

Did you check and see if you were going to need a BIOS update to support the later processor?

Um, no I did't check that, and maybe thats the issue. How would I update the bios when the computer isnt even booting properly. My screen does not get a signal and my MoBo dsnt do the beep it should.

EDIT: I'm just going to return the CPU to the reseller and tell them the CPU was corrupt. Hopefully AMD will live up to their warranty.

Arrow They will ...
Wow lesson learned here ... don't trash anything that is working until you are sure you don't need it ... I guess there is no way to recover the old cpu ... non existent now? You shouldn't have any trouble retuning the cpu but they probably will test it to see if it's bad, and charge restocking fee or something like that ...

lmao, agreed. well, the CPU and it's heatsink is in the hardware trashbag in my room. And well, i bet the pins has been beaten up enough to be non-functional atm. Even if it was working I have no thermal paste to reapply. I just hope the processor wont pass their diagnostic test. As they charge me $100 if, say, it was my MoBo's fault and the processor was working as intended (highly doubtful).
