Yes,
You will just need to select the HDMI output on the laptop - possible one of the F keys or FN key + F key to toggle the output - between , Laptop, HDMI , Laptop & HDMI (although in this position you will get a copyright protection error , if playing bluray DVDs - If laptop has bluray player)

then select the HDMI input on TV

so you just need to look at the graphic card driver - if you need to change a setting to output to HDMI
control panel >display>advanced>advenced button

As its a desktop - its possible that you will need to tell the PC to use the HDMI output in order to get a signal output (May NOT depends on how its all setup)

to do that you may need to go into the Video Driver and set to output to HDMI
to get to that area you need to goto the
Start Button
then click on control panel
look for Display
in display they will be an advanced tab
in the advanced tab you will see a button called advanced
in that box - you need to find TV out or Output Tab and see if there is a setting for HDMI

OR
it may just work

Exact Model of the PC - and see if we can find an online manual which describes using the HDMI output

It SHOULD work straight off the bat. I have done it with a HDMI/ DVI and a HDMI/HDMI cable, on different set ups- both times, it goes straight in. Only thing that really made any difference was the lack of resolutins available- some progs I have to drop to a lower res,- but bar that, shouldnt be any problems.
HOWEVER you need to be sure of what video card you have- modern ATI (at least) have no probs, and if its onboard same should apply. Havent tried with others
