Solved: Computer doesnt switch on properly
I have a HP Laptop - Compaq nx6310. Operating Windows XP.

When I turn the computer on, the desktop picture appears. However nothing else appears including the task bar and the icons on the desktop... Only the backround picture appears but cannot be clicked on. I have to start any programs or work through task manager..

PLEASE HELP...

Thanks

Try getting into Safemode and try this first

Last Known Good Configuration
  • Re start your PC
  • Immediately on startup start tapping F8
  • About every second before the window screens
  • You should see a black screen with white writing
  • Use your arrow keys to select "Last Known Good Configuration"
  • Press Enter

Tried that. Can get on to safe mode and it works fine (only on safe mode) but when I press last known configuration it does exactly what it was doing before.

What about going into safemode and trying System Restore to an earlier time

Tried that also - it says that system restore has been turned off by group policy.

Do you have the operating System on disc....if so put it in and then:

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the program, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

If that doesn't work......try restarting the PC and getting to the plain screen that you get...and get Task Manager up and click top left file then click on New Task ...in the box type explorer.exe click OK....see what happens

I cannot find my XP disc. While I look for it is there anything else I can try in the meantime. I tried that explorer.exe. It just opened My Documents with an explorer bar on the left.
