Unhappy Major mouse problem with Vista Home.
For about six or seven months, I've had the same problem with my Vista laptop. Whenever I turn it on, the mouse works for the first five or six seconds after log-in, but then freezes and refuses to move. I've tried the mouse in all four USB ports, none of which seem to do the trick. I know it's not the mouse itself, because it works on my other laptop (XP) and desktop (also XP). Before the cessation of movement, the mouse worked fine with the current Vista system, but decided to stop working randomly one day.

I've tried disabling/enabling, installing/uninstalling the mouse software and even the USB root hubs, in the hope that after the restart, the computer would install fresh software and the problem would be remedied. Yet every time I restart, it goes through the cycle of saying it's installing software for new hardware, the mouse works for five or six seconds and then freeze, nothing more.

In Device Manager, the hardware seems to be listed both as a Human Interface Device and under Mice & Pointing Devices as "HID-Compliant Mouse".

Anyone any ideas on what might be causing it to suddenyly stop working after five seconds each time?

Thanks in advance.

What mouse is it? Are there Vista drivers for it? I have seen some logitech periphials act real picky about drivers, and their managements software.

Thanks for the reply. It's just a cheap mouse. Speedlink SL-6176.

Might be worth trying a USB to PS/2 adapter to eliminate USB driver issues.

I am using one of those Packard Bell Easynote laptops, it has 4 USB ports and not a single PS2 one. Any other ideas?

Nope, I've tried two other USB wired mice, neither of which did the job.
