I recently reformatted my PC which went exactly as it should however when i booted up my computer my speakers were no longer working (i use logitech x-530 speakers). I went into control panel > sounds speech and audio devices, and apparently there are no audio devices being recognised, i downloaded and installed all possible drivers but still no luck. My computer will still make the 1 tone beep, however nothing more.
Could it jsut be that my sound card is caput?

Most likely no, your sound card is probably OK.

Post your exact system specs; ie make and model of mb, make and model of sound card, etc. Next post a screenshot of device manager.

For future reference, when you intend to install an os, it is a good idea to download ALL of the drivers, patches, and service packs you are going to need. Put those on a dvd, flash drive, external hd, etc. This makes the install go much easier.

Next when you install windows, you generally install in the following order;
1 Install the os
2 Update to latest service pack ie xp sp3, vista sp2, etc
3 Install chipset/mb drivers
4 Install sound, nic drivers as necessary
5 Install video driver
6 If all is well, activate windows and then make a backup image of the system with all drivers installed, service pack installed, and windows activated. If you ever need to clean install again, it takes all of 5min to restore the image and have a "Clean" install.

You didn't mention which version of Windows you've installed, and you didn't mention the description(brand name, model name, model number) your computer.

Thanks very much for the advice crjdriver, i've copied all that info down incase i come to install another os.
For the mean time though heres the info you asked for :
MB - Asus M2VTVM-VM890 (V2-AE2)
Soundcard is built on the mb

First thing to install is under the "Others" category. Its the "VIA Chipset Driver Program V507B for Windows 2000/XP/2003/XP 64bit/2003 64bit" Its a compressed ZIP file so extract all the files then run the Setup/Install.

Then from "Audio" download and install the "Realtek Audio Driver V5.10.0.6050 for Windows 2000/XP/2003/XP 64bit/2003 64bit" driver.

Just downloaded and installed both drivers, rebooted my pc and still no sound from my speakers, and still no audio devices in my control panel :/

I was looking through your screenshot; do you have some type of TV tuner or video capture card installed?

I'm pretty sure I havn't, however, i'm unsure how I'd check.

OK, just to be sure you have installed service pack 3 correct?
Next I would think there is some conflict since you posted you installed all possible drivers. Remove these and install the following;
1 The chipset driver that Triple6 linked for you
2 Install the audio driver in the same link

Make sure you reboot after installing each driver.

You hit the nail on the head crj, I had windows service pack 2 installed, and for some reason automatic updates hadnt downloaded and installed it.
Downloaded it myself and works a treat thanks very much everyone for your help
